The film felt like everything was upside down when compared to the original. After and during the film I also felt like you can’t cram this story into 1 movie. Well you CAN but for me it just feels like it’s rushed.
If I consider it a stand-alone film then one word sums the whole movie up: ‘Pointless’
Ryuk’s existence towards the story, leaps of logic with L, Light’s motivations are pointless or non-existent etc.
The anime felt like you’re on the edge, Light needs to constantly be 1-3 steps ahead and it’s a constant struggle for information with the 2 parties. The cold war between Light and the detectives and Light needed to keep a straight face all the time despite what. The only thing Light could count on was his own wits and his only mistake was to trust other people.
But this movie? In short it’s just an slap in the face if you liked the anime even a little. And if you don’t know anything about Death Note then the movie just feels even more pointless.

24:40 Alias means a false identity. So saying "Fake alias" would mean that that’s his real ident- I’m so confused.

I sort of enjoyed it as a "stand alone". I didn’t really care for Light’s relationship with Mia. Light’s character was weak and his only redemption is his final scene where he reveals how he got out of his bind. It makes sense why Light isn’t liked among his peers, taking place in America the intelligent are often bullied and ostracized. Still they could have made him an intelligent, handsome, athletic all american boy who doesn’t have social ineptness.(Light in the anime/manga also dabbled in sports so this isn’t like odd.) I liked L’s character but him breaking could have been handled better. Like Idk we don’t see much of L and Watari’s relationship outside of Watari obviously being L’s handler. Watari might be all that L has in the world as far as companionship but it’s not expressed well the meaning of this relationship. So L loosing his shit just feels so empty and out of his character. Mia was the least likable character of all. Mia was more of the antagonist than L or Ryuk. Plus like she’s into killing and death right away without any kind of reason for it. What does she gain by killing criminals and why’s it such a turn on for her? Its a bit disturbing just how much she’s into it. She pretty much uses sex to get what she want’s, a blood bath. It makes me wonder just how does the director view women? I hate it. Ryuk was one of my favorite characters possibly. I wish his motives where less clear to make him more of a supernatural unknown entity. I really like William Defoe and was really happy he was doing Ryuk. He did a great job, I loved the voice acting a lot. I wish he had gotten more lines but better lines. What sold the movie as something i enjoyed was the ending. Its sort of has the potential to be ambiguous. Ryuk’s final line to a scared looking Light while hovering ominously in shadowed over form is "humans are so interesting" as he chuckles a bit. We don’t know if L wrote Light’s name but it could be presumed that he did. This ultimately would create implications for L’s character. Essentially L committed the very act he was seeking to end. This would have been so much more significant if they had explored L’s character more. Something about that ending and even the song just clicked. Granted the lyrics to an 80s love song was not the best choice, something in that genre and style but about death would have been significant. Finally in my opinion I feel like we needed more of a sturdy L who is a quote on quote pillar of modern societies justice vs more of a supernaturally charismatic Light (NO MIA) to have given the ending the note it was trying to send. That even L a pillar of what our justice system is (innocent til proven guilty) is fallible to Light’s type of justice (Your Guilty Therefore you must die).

You know… I can see they were making this as a passionate fan. But… they need to work on their writing and characterizations.

My least favorite thing about this goddamn abortion of Death Note’s original story is how they made Ryuk influence Light so much, that’s not who Ryuk was at all it pisses me off.

Dude, the heart attacks the crime bosses suddenly have at the same time are a dead giveaway that would spread in the media. So in my oppinion the deaths in the anime are way better. I also hate how they keep the rules they didn’t have to work around but ditch others like that the people won’t do what they have no knowledge of, like write in a different language. I also can’t see it as a blank slate when they keep so much of the anime in the movie, why not make a new story in the universe just to keep some names because they were in the anime but have them not even remotely come near the people they resemble.

The only thing horrifying about this movie is what the people who made it (HIRO NAKAMURA for Christs’ sakes!) did to the entirety of the Death Note fan community. Beginning to get the feeling I need to make my own review of this, even if it’s out of date to do so at this point.

You can’t kill someone using someone else without knowing their name and including it in the scheme. You could write "Blake will shot Ashley with the gun he keeps under his desk and them shoot himself at 2:44am October 12th 2017." But you have to write both of their names in the book, have their faces in mind, and it has to be physically possible and believable as something they might do. The death note is limited by those rules. Also, the time limit for control is 23 days, not two. I realize that was a mistake in the movie, and not in your video specifically, but it’s still fucking wrong.

Holy shit.
You’re legitimately the first person I’ve seen bring up the god damn Dutch angles.
They drove me absolutely fucking nuts. It’s supposed to emphasize drama and tension in a scene and yet they use one every five fucking minutes.
It was maddening.
The only film the outdoes it is Battlefield Earth. Seriously, *every* single shot.

Hey I’m afraid when you use terms like "Light I’magay" to make fun of a character, people might think that you are a tad homophobic.

It isn’t popular, but I think Light Turner plays a teenage boy more believably than Light Yagami did. I never bought Yagami as a teenager. He reasoned too much like an adult. Way too smart, worldly, and charismatic. Should have cast him as a young, brilliant lawyer finding the book. Turner reacts as an actual kid would in the same situation.
To be fair, I didn’t see the anime till I was already an adult though.

this movie was shit and it bugged the hell out of me, i know we arent suppose to really compare it to the anime, but if you watched the anime like id like to say 99% of the people have watched this movie, then it is impossible to not to compare them. the only thing i liked from this movie is Ryuk, i love William Dafoe as Ryuk

Hey, don’t you worry about "saying what everyone else has said". You don’t watch a 50 minute video review for a pros-and-cons breakdown, you watch it for the style and personality. And I like your style and personality, you pink-haired dweeb <3

Here’s my take on this POS : If the writers and film makers cared enough about the source material, they would have made their own original story about the Death Note, with occasional nods to the first story. Case and point : the first Silent Hill movie.

People criticize this L for being emotional, but I really don’t think the anime personality would play in live action. It would just be one expression, with one tone of voice, and one emotional state. That gives the actor nothing to work with, and it would make a really boring performance. They got the important stuff, the otherworldly presence and bizarre behavior, the super intelligence, and the feeling that this guy is less human and more a tool created by the government. He’s not a person with memories of a childhood, parents, or friends. He is practically built, not born.
Light, Itself.
October 9, 2018 @ 10:42 pm
19:12–19:16 "Where Light tells L that he is in fact L" I can already see fangirls who are in love with this guy’s animated character, simply because it has pink hair. Which causes them to believe that it is "creative" and "unique" getting extremely pissed off at reading this, and eventually thinking. "Well it is 50 minutes long. It is "understandable" for him to disregard a significant thing from the series, while he was editing the video. Nobody’s perfect, we are all humans, we all make mistakes" Alright thank you for being "unpredictable" I will just wait for another individual to share their own opinion.
