I think this one along with howl’s moving castle, spirited away as well as the kingdom of the cats i think it is called are my favorite ghilbli movies. Glad you enjoyed it 🙂

if you ever have another reason to watch this again, or show it to someone else, the version voiced by dakota and ellle fanning as satsuki and mae is best, imo.

Did you know that Gregory Snegoff, the voice of Daddy in this dub, is related to the voice actresses for Mommy and Satsuki, but differently from their characters?

Also, Totoro went to the bus stop to catch the CatBus, not to just stand with the girls. And when he roared really loud in the girl’s face, he was calling the CatBus. When you were explaining it, it didn’t seem like you knew that?

If you asked you about the mother’s sickness, she has tuberculosis.
About Totoro, I think he’s real because Internet says he’s the wood spirit. It’s not show on the film but only children (and animals) can see him and the cat-bus.
You should watch " Pompoko " after that. Totoro and Kiki make a cameo on this film

there are two english dubs though. the original and the disney one. disney got the fanning sisters to do the voices.

I saw it Yesterday. I was grinning and laughing like a complete idiot during the whole movie. It is the Most Calm and Comforting movie I’ve ever seen. Hayao Miyazaki and Studio Ghibli are Exceptional everytime.

Eric, your face in this one 😲 I loved it! 💗 miyazaki is a modern fairy tale maker… that’s how I see him and his creative vision. He also makes "films" but I think his impact is in his ingenuity in sharing age old wisdoms and the creativity and organic nature of his imagery. This & Princess Mononoke are my two favorite. I think the rest are all miraculous as well but those mean the most to me for some reason. I also love how the father is supportive of his girls’ imagination and belief. Instead of suppressing their tales of Totoro, he encourages them and actually participates in the magic with them. 💗😁🥰 you dont have to deny the natural mysticism of life to be an adult! 😲💗😁🥰😉 Thanks for sharing with us & love that you went for the original dub!! (I’ve really grown to appreciate it over the years)

I just watched this for the first time and it was so cute, I was also really worried when Satsuki got the call from her dad about the mum and when she was being mean to Mei.
Studio Ghibli movies always give me a sense of nostalgia and comfort, the animation and vibrancy is always so charming and the detail is great, Studio Ghibli movies are just beautiful, great comfort movies, I have so much respect for all the talented people who worked at Studio Ghibli and the ones there today too.

The Tree was gone in the morning, BUT the nuts and seeds had sprouted!
So…… was it a dream? Was it real? I think it’s left for us to decide.
Also, the reason Mei was going to the hospital was to give her Mom the ear of corn, hoping it would make her better.

Being half Japanese I grew up with Totoro, but it was like 15+ years before I heard an American say “Totoro” as “Toe-Toe-Row” lol I completely forgot the R/L sounds in Japanese and English being hard to differentiate between

I realized as soon as I heard Mei talk at the start that you were watching the old dub. The Disney script is a little different. It’s hard for me to get used to not hearing the Fanning sisters.

It’s hard to Believe that My Neighbor Totoro and Grave of the Fireflies were released as a Double Feature in 1988.
Studio Ghibli was like:
"Here’s
My Neighbor Totoro… The Most Joyful Movie Ever Made
and
Grave of the Fireflies… The Most Depressing Movie Ever Made.
Enjoy."
I don’t know what would be My Reaction after watching both the films back to back in 1988.
