I don’t know what film Doug was watching because I’m pretty sure he glossed over the fact that the girls were only imagining Totoro and the cat bus because they were trying to cope with their mother being in the hospital. To me, that’s pretty fuckin’ deep stuff there. I mean, yeah, it’s a subtle film…. But then, so are a lot of films. Lost in Translation, for instance, is a masterclass in subtly and it’s one of Doug’s favourites. I don’t know. I just think My Neighbor Totoro should be given much more credit. It’s not just a cutesy anime for kids.

Miyazaki films always feel so oppressive to me. The whole war time theme always end up having the fluff being metaphors for deaths and crossing over.

I think the main reason this movie exploded is just because Totoro is an icon waiting to happen. His design, much like Mickey Mouse, is very simple but memorable.

I actually had the American Fox version on vhs as a kid which didn’t have the Fanning sisters voiceovers. loved it! I lost the video though. I might have to get the Blu-ray one day. My mom thought Snorlax from Pokemon looked like Totoro! lol!

-the animation is great
-the characters are cute
-it recreates certain people’s childhood, the relationships you had as a kid, the conflicts you might have (their mother was sick and dying)
So it’s kind of wish fulfillment for kids, you have a nice family and you feel protected , but you also have a little mystery, that’s all a lot of people (or at least I) really wanted as a kid.

The original Fox dub is so much better than the Disney dub. The Disney dub is okay, but I can’t get into it

i like how american films are panned by critics for being plotless and too child friendly, yet the same rules don’t apply to japanese films

This movie is a slice of life, yes, but these little girls are trying to cope with their mom being seriously ill. That is what drives the plot. The climax is not contrived when you understand that. Mei does not understand time, too young, and wants her mom home now, misunderstands something that’s said and goes to try and make her mom better NOW!

Yeah, I guess if you didn’t grow up with this movie–then I can understand that it’s not for everybody. But that’s only because this movie’s target audience were kids that were at least younger than 6. The way the girls get excited over the small wonders when they move into the new house for example is generally how kids would feel, even just running around the yard and chasing around animals are usually how kids explore while they’re playing. I was at a daycare center where I saw the kids that age in their massive forestie-like-playground where they literally run around like lunatics because the way the leaves were falling. This movie also shows that kids don’t always need to rely on things like Youtube and video games to keep themselves heavily entertained. Nature can be pretty fun too. Honestly as a kid that age, this was the only movie that was interesting because the way the kids reacted was relatable for me that age. Maybe it’s not a good movie to show to adults but it’s definitely worth a movie to show to kids

Doug clearly doesn’t understand that for most people, this was their first taste of anime, its popularity stems from its connections to their childhood of seeing this film at a young age and how it grew to almost become the cultural icon of anime in general.

When I saw this movie, I didn’t expected anything. And for me, it was just something to spend the time. It’s not a big deal, but Totoro’s face will always creep me out.

Maybe this movie isn’t "huge" and "spectacular" "full of wonder and adventure" but the movie is huge emotionally! Not all movies can achieve that. Also I think movie like this is much much much more difficult to make it interesting and hooked because it doesn’t have adventure or big story. Still it is engaging and wonderful in it’s own way which is just amazing. The movie is just too cute to handle :’)

that is actually why i like this film so much and why i love ghibli so much, it’s just so like…magical. like not disney magical but like a more real, nostalgic magical. the feeling of being imaginative, of having an adventure, what it felt like to be a kid and really believe in shit. it just touches at some part of you that…maybe you feel like you’ve lost or maybe just that you’ve forgotten about in lieu of adultier shit. my favorite is whisper of the heart, because it deals in the real magic of love, hard work, dreaming, family, and small adventures and curiosities.

Do you seriously not see what this movie is about? This movie is about two girls who come up with imaginary creatures to cope with the underlying fear that their mother might die. This movie isn’t meant to be taken literally. Their mother is sick, their father has to pick up the pieces, and they just moved to a new area where they don’t know anybody so they make up these spirit things to make up for their loneliness. On top of all this, their father doesn’t really know how to keep his kids happy so he just kinda goes along with it. It’s so infuriating that people, even in the fanbase, don’t understand that there’s so much more to this film than just being a cute little kids’ movie. I’m done with my rant now.

Aleight, but why on Disneycember? It has nothing to do with Disney, as far as I’m aware. I’m not complaining, but it’s just wierd…
Nice review, by the way. Wierd that Guilbi dint strike down the video.

I thought the mother was going to die at the end when I first saw the movie because that’s what usually happens in kids films. And I was so surprised when she lived.

He should’ve checked out the fox version because there is two versions of the English dubbed. Disney has the Fanning sisters while the fox version has different voice actors

The silent/slow paced scenes in this movie are done on purpose by Miyazaki. It is actually called “Ma”- a slow paced, not moving/always moving innocence.
