Megalo Box Anime Review – Story is weak? EPs 1-6 + Ashita No Joe
Megalo Box Anime Review – Story is weak? EPs 1-6 + Ashita No Joe
I feel the anime has gotten a drop in story quality, especially when compared to the original 1968 boxing story Ashita No Joe.

Dont compare the quality. just compare the similarities. The story for this was never good anyways. Its pretty typical. I think some people expect it to be amazing or something. Its just an entertaining series that has references to Joe. 13 episodes isn’t enough tbh. If it was longer maybe the quality would be a lot better

Dude your bias is showing you kinda ignored everything that the show does right. I get it you like OG Joe and it’s consider a masterpiece and rightfully so but I think this show does alot right and different to mabey be held up as classic one day also I was really not interested in something that omage something and retold something so hard beat for beat then this show just comes off like and unoriginal inside joke granted we are at midpoint of show.

I think gearless nature might lead to either Yuri or Jpe dieing. In the original series Joe was a lower weight class so rikishi goes through rapid weight loss. So what if Yuri does ditch his gear and both end up dead Joe from the damage he took winning. Fights without gear and Yuri for putting himself in the same position as Joe

You can’t really have more story than there is with 13 episodes, they’re giving the fights and action what they deserve, I partially agree with you that some aspects could’ve been done better though, but the anime is so good still

Hi AnimeHero It’s me Toon King nice video say I just Finish Devilman Lady And Neo Devilman also Mazinger Angels and Mazinger Angels Z
And it was awesome thank you and falcon punch 996 for recommending these series although there were some parts of Mazinger Angels and it’s sequel that borthered me I really enjoyed it it was a fun read.
Also can you explain to me if Devilman Lady And Neo Devilman are in the continuity/universe of the original 1972 Devilman and can you explain the whole Demon Lord Dante Stuff in Devilman Lady And AKIRA FUDO being in it that I got really confused???
THANK YOU and Keep Up The Good Videos have a great day.

No one has mentioned it so far but voice direction, music and sound design are the things that make the show even more underwhelming than it already can be for someone!
Somehow uninspired seiyuus and weak sounds are something that keeps me from enjoying the anime completely. WIthout them it’s just… Pretty okay. On the other hand, animation and art direction are just plain beautiful. You can see that all the budget went here.
Shame that the pacing in some scenes is kind of fucked up too. For example, when Joe loses his newly acquired gear but defeats the enemy without it, it should feel victorious. But because it’s too fast it just feels… Awkward, that’s probably the word I was looking for.
Just for the record, I don’t hate the anime that much but I can’t say I enjoyed it completely.

im in the episode 4 and i am really liking it so far, but i see what you say, it appears to loose steam with every episode, i hope that its going to get better at the end.

Although I’m more concerned about Cutie Honey Universe than this, Megalo Box will have a hard time to deliver the magic of it’s predecessor by having it under 13 episodes. Unless there is a sequel planned for it of course.

Honestly, the gears are the one thing I actively disliked about the show and when Joe went Gearless, it was one of my favorite moments. I have to seriously disagree with you in this video. Granted, I have not watched Ashita no Joe (I do plan on it though) but it seems to me that you’re far too clouded by Ashita no Joe when watching this and expecting this show to be something it isn;t. I also felt the episodes with Aragaki were the absolute best so I don’t agree at all that the story has "dropped in quality".

I´m more confortable looking how they´re different more than how they´re similar. I´m glad that JD and Joe aren´t the same character because even if they share the "origin" Joe was working his way to change himself and JD is jst an outcast trying to discover his worth. I´m fine with the series not being as good as the original ( With 13 episodes it wasn´t going to happen unless they resolve sourronding JD) because what they have here isn´t half as bad

Well, for me, megalobox is not the most memorable anime that i ever seen…but indeed make me curius about "Ashita no Joe", and i will watch it because megalobox…maybe this was one of the objectives of megalobox

I still love megalo box but it will never be as good as ashita no joe but I think it was never meant to surpass it in the first place. I believe that its more of a tribute if anything and I think its doing well in that regard.
and I am just happy that the series as a whole is getting more attention thanks to it.

Obviously it’s not the same thing. They clearly said its inspired by Ashita No Joe and celebrating its anniversary. It is its own story.

Agree with you. Megalo Box is cool but that’s it, it is just cool. I never expected it to be as good as AnJ but I was hoping it would try to focus more to tell a more humane and emotional story like AnJ did instead of putting the focus mostly on the boxing, how they climb the ladder and being just as cool as possible. Megalo Box feels more typical in terms of an underdog boxing story compared to AnJ. MB isn’t over so far and we don’t know what they planned for the rest (except the ending) but I hope it picks up a bit more steam in its second half.

I agree that the animation is lackluster and boring, Joe’s presence is non-existent the same thing can be said with Yuri . the story is extremely bad and cliche also the fights are boring I feel the series in general chain down by 13 episode limit I feel it would a lot better character development wise with more episodes

I mean Ashita no Joe had 79 episodes to world build, expand character development and enrich the plot. Megalo Box has 13. I personally think that Megalo Box is doing an amazing job at recapturing the essence and the overall "magic" that it’s predecessor has. To say that a boxing anime has too much boxing is hypocritical. In terms of "plot", We had:
Episode 1: World building and introducing the goal of the series
Episode 2: Fight with Yuri, The development of the coach and the build up for the fights
Episode 3: Development for the child and set up for the first fight
Episode 4: The first fight and a huge hurdle the mc has to overcome
Episode 5: Development of both the coach and his previous fighter
Episode 6: Joe vs the coach’s predecessor

Megalo Box lacks a good story, but my biggest problem with it is the lack of good boxing. I just feel the fights are two guys throwing punches without any definite styles.

i dont get the ashita no joe praise, i mean Hajime no ippo is just better in almost everything. The only weakness of Ippo is that it never ends but thats it.

Im still confused how they’re not killing each other with those gears when nobody wears protective helmet when even barefist can already kill, it sure feels pointless

No sé siente la presencia Yuri como el gran antagonista. Y la mafia se vio muy débil en ayudar tan fácilmente a Joe con su ID. tal vez lo refuercen en los siguientes capítulos.

I tried watching ashita no joke was honestly bored to tears. I like megalobox better. I’m not saying joe doesn’t deserve to be a classic or was poorly written, it just isn’t my style. I’ve also tried to watch fist of the north star and just couldn’t get into it. I’m loving golden kamuy even with its shitty cgi bears though.

Megalo Box does not have to be, and doesn’t even strive to be, better or even as good as Joe. The reason this was made was to celebrate it’s predecessor, this show has gotten more people interested in watching or reading the series and that’s the real goal here. I don’t think bemoaning how it isn’t as good, discouraging the merits this show does have and insisting Joe is better is helpful at all. Insinuating this could at all go in the direction of Joe vs Joe is absolutely absurd. On your point about Yuri, I think at this point in the story he’s gotten just as much as Rikiishi, he’s supposed to be far away meant as something for JD to reach for. If anything there hasn’t been enough Yukiko, which makes it clear to me you don’t have enough understanding of Joe to even mention how important Yoko is to the series. Anyway this whole vid is in bad taste since we’re only half way through, you’re free to voice your concerns but I don’t think they added up to much.

I hope you do a full review, the last episode was soooo dissapointing with that Disney ending lol.
And the average Joe didn’t even care about Nanbu’s eye or Yuri’s legs xD
