Kirito is not a villian. But the group was looking for a scapegoat. Diabel’s last words were begging him to keep everyone together. So Kirito swallowed hard, and pretended to be evil so everyone would join together…and HATE HIM. He called beta testers weaker than him, so players would hate HIM instead of them.
So now he’s "that BEATER", the one everyone hates.

There are a lot of reasons and theories why Diablo never took the potion. The biggest theory I was able to come to terms with was the fact that he wanted to accept death. You have to understand that there are lots of people that are fearful of the situation they are in. Think of it as though you’re a teenager stepping into adulthood. Now you have to get a job or go to college, pay taxes, commit to society, and find a goal in life to live for. In this sense, everyone has to constantly survive in this game of death where there are no do-overs. Thus, it was theorized that Diablo wanted to cheat for the bonus loot, but when it came time that he was going to die, he accepted it instead of living in constant fear of having to survive in SAO.

You should also watch log horizon. It’s also another great game related anime where players are stuck in the game but it goes into more detail,world-building , strategy and they cant die so it’s interesting.

If you’ve heard of the movie Sword Art Online Progressive: Aria of a Starless Night, it basically covers the first two episodes of this series, but from Asuna’s perspective. One thing you find out about the Aincrad arc (the first one) is as good as it is, it’s quite rushed. That’s because the original work was just one novel long, and it basically covers the first episode, then jumps all the way to the end of the arc. The reason is because the original novel was submitted for (and won) the Dengeki Bunko award, and to qualify for that one must write a story that comes to a definitive end. The series was developed after the fact. Volumes 2, 4, 8, and 21 all contain short stories for Aincrad; other short stories were published for web, conventions, or DVD box sets, but not published (as of yet) by Kadokawa, and as you collect all these sources together that’s how you get the Aincrad arc. However, it was never fleshed out the way Reki Kawahara wanted it. That’s what the Progressive series is – the author going back to the Aincrad arc and rewriting it floor by floor. And I want to say as of volume 8 we’re on either floor 6 or 7.

So the reason that he didn’t take the potion is kind of two reasons. First of all, he felt guilty for trying to take advantage of the raid party and take the special item for himself, which tbh I kind of feel he would have deserved anyway for his leadership during the fight.
But mostly I’m pretty sure at that point his HP was at 0. There is a small period between your HP hitting 0 and your in-game character being destroyed and your brain being fried. This actually is important to acknowledge because there is technically an item that exists in SAO that can revive a player whose HP has hit 0 as long as you activate it within about 10 seconds. That timer is because it takes about that long for the part of the nervegear that fries your brain to power up.
I think at the point his HP was at 0 a health potion would have done nothing. Basically only a revival item would have worked at that stage.

If you want to understand this series better, i would definitely recommend you watching the English Dub version. There are some times in the series where the subtitles don’t exactly match up with what they’re saying word for word. I don’t know about you but I think that you should try and stick the English dub version from now on just so you better understand what’s going on in certain scenes.

SAO is like one of the best animes of its time, but it had a decline then rise in the alicization arc. Hope you enjoy the ride!
