SAO isn’t the worst anime of all time. It’s the worst (or at least one of the worst) pieces of fiction of all time.

Personally, I think Sword Art Online is a wonderful anime, to the point I would even dare to say it is possibly the best I’ve ever watched. That may sound like an exaggeration, but it’s true, I loved that universe that much.
The premise of being stuck is a virtal online death game may sound bizarre at first, but the way each character reacted to that scenario in different ways was really breathtaking. It explores the nature of the human mind, there are people that actually give their best to beat the game and escape, but at the same time there also others that don’t wan’t to risk their lives if the stakes are that high and decide to just live inside the game, others that pretty much just give up and even a few that fall into the lowest point of their humanity and enjoy to kill the other players like psychopaths. In a sense, I like to compare it with something like The Walking Dead, but without the zombies and an actual, but slim, hope of escaping for the cast. I also love how it fits in the work pretty much all of the tropes about online games like the quests, the rare itens, the classes, the player killer system, the guilds, the list goes on.
In short, it is not just gloom, doom, endless fights and despair all over the place, it is also about the humanity of the cast and how they keep trying to maintain it despite of their chances because if you watched it you know they do have a time limit to beat the game. I see it as the reason Yui, their adopted digital daughter, becomes a member of the cast mid-season and the bond between all of these characters is what made this anime so great in my eyes. I’ve came for the death game and stayed for the wonderful characters and how they interact with each other, I’ve actually starting cheering for their success because I fell in love with them.
However, even I have to admit the last part of the season didn’t maintain the level and that’s why I can’t give it a perfect score. Once the game is cleared, pretty much everyone comes back to the real world, except for a few people, including the main character’s love interest. Asuna is still trapped in the virtual world thanks to the actions of the new arc villain, a corrupt and creepy business man that wants to use these individuals as part of a ploy to get power and is such a hate sink of a character that he wishes to marry her by force. The plot is a far cry from the last arc and pretty much reduces Asuna to the status of a damsel in distress trapped in a cell, so Kirito has to enter a new game made by this villain to rescue her and the only thing at stake is her. And that’s without mentioning the subplot about a new character that debuts in this arc that has an incestuous infatuation for Kirito and that made me feel mildly uncomfortable. I will be honest, this arc was not good and if it wasn’t for the fact I was that invested in the relationship between these two I would have skipped it. It’s a good thing the second season goes back to exploring the implications of the scars the death game from the first season, despite long beaten, left in some people and how some of its old player killers are affecting yet another game.

Finally someone defends this show! I’ll admit I have a little bit of nostalgia for this show(it’s the first anime I binge watched) but it’s not as bad as some people make it out to be it’s at least decent.

Thanks for this Chris. I can understand people not liking SAO and that’s fair enough, everyone has different tastes and different tolerances, but I’m not fond of how it has become cool to just hate on it and exaggerate how it is somehow objectively terrible. It’s pretty much become a meme to hate on it and I find that sad. I really like SAO and don’t want to feel like I’m doing something wrong by liking it.

SAO is a 6/10 in my honest opinion. With that very strong first half and the entirely shitty Aincrad Arc

To me the anime became bad once they asked the creator why he was killing people and he responded with "I don’t remember". That was the final straw for me. I could handle all of the really bad plot holes and the weird romance/harem, but when the anime doesn’t even want to tell me why I had to experience this adventure, then I don’t care for the anime any more.

I think it was average at best, then the whole yui turned into an item from code he’s never seen, and does it in like 30 seconds. and a worse anime is school days
