This movie came out in 1988… my birthyear 🙂
It was on of my first anime’s as a U.S. person, rented this on VHS back in the day (blockbuster). Its a watch once cry, and never again. Very true surreal movie about war/drama and those whose stories will never be told.

アメリカを批判するわけじゃなくて戦争の残酷さを表現してるのが素晴らしい。
戦争に加害者も被害者も存在しない。
でもk国とかが同じ映画を作ってたら敵国を批判するだけの映画になってただろうね

Sakuma Drops, which Setsuko liked, are still on sale. I used to eat a lot when I was a kid. Like this movie, when the contents were gone, I drank it with water. If you can buy it in the UK on Amazon etc., try it.

The tomb of the fireflies is not an anti-war movie.Director Isao Takahata himself certainly said in some interviews that it was not an anti-war.
A story about two children dying in the wild, resisting the inconvenience imposed by society and continuing to try to be a family

海外の方々に理解してほしい事があります。
この映画が伝えたい事は、戦争は悲惨であるという事です。
アメリカ軍の批判ではありません。
その証拠に、この映画にはアメリカ兵は出て来ません。
この映画は、狂った政府に対する批判と、犠牲になった人々への鎮魂(Requiem)と戦争の現実を知らない世代に向けて作られたものです。

I think the thing that messes me up the most is the ending with how they both can only find peace in the afterlife. Looking at a now modernized and peaceful world with technology/sky scrapers that is way past their understanding and peace that they’ve never known during their short lived lives. But at the very least they can look at what they wish they had when they were alive… SO DAMN SAD.

I think the part that got me the most was honestly 30:28 Those were one of if not the last of their mothers things. Setsko also didn’t know her mother was dead so she probably assumed that the mom would need them back.

That’s M69 bomb. Made by Americans. M69 incendiary bomblet was used in air raids on Japan and China during World War II. They were nicknamed "Tokyo calling cards".
It was tested against typical German and Japanese residential structures at Japanese Village and German Village.
the bombs were very effective in setting fire to Japanese civilian structures in mass firebombing raids starting in February 1945 against Kobe. extensive damage was done to Tokyo, to Nagoya, to Osaka, and to Kobe.

As an iraqi i know the taste of the war. We had a bad ruler who would start wars and blow up his people without caring. And now we have a group of thieves who steal everything in the country and accumulate poverty in all the governorates of Iraq. When it’s about war nobody will win we all gonna lose as a humans. I hope that war between russia and ukrane stop as soon as possiable 😔
