Everything makes sense in AOT my friend.
– Erwin knows there is no turning back. The entrance is blocked. This is the Final Op to retake Wall Maria as he said at the end of 3×12.
– It was a FALSE piece of the wall. That’s why the scouts were using their blades looking for weak spots. The shot from Reiner’s POV inside the wall showed the cutout piece had jagged edges. Remember they’ve had months to plan for this ambush.
– The glowing ore was mined from the Reiss Underground Cave. In Episode 3×06 Eren asked why the walls were glowing. And stated that he couldn’t tell if it was day or night there. In Episode 3×07 Rod revealed that it was made by a Titan and that Three Walls were also built by the same power. Hange discovered this early in Season 2 when experimenting with the shard of Annie’s crystal.

Most of the new recruits like Reiner, Bertholdt, and Sasha were isolated in the countryside (S2E1) when Annie was captured. They didn’t know what happened.
