Its almost been 25 years since Neon Genesis Evangelion premiered in Japan. Before 1995… anime was very different. It was mainly focused on children shows instead of the thought provoking anime we get today. Thanks to Studio Gainax Anime & Manga was forever changed! It inspired countless series afterwards and made way for Anime Studios to experiment with niche anime.

I love Neon Genesis Evangelion for its intricate and complicated human interactions and relationships. It really did a lot to put anime on the scene! Great artbook Chibi, I dig it.

Contraversial Opinion inc: There are series that had way more impact than Evangelion did. Akira, Astroboy, diebuster/gunbuster, cowboy beebop, GiTS, Berserk.
Evangelion is best known as one of the most overhyped trainwrecks in existence. How a series that required separate movies to explain its clusterfuck of a plot is praised as much as it is is beyond me.
Dont even get me started on how none of the characters are even remotely likeable. I actually commend anyone that is able to get through the entire show without punching a hole through their monitor.
The series suffers from over-use of religious symbolism to the point that it makes the entire show a unwatchable mess. There is absolutely no character development throughout the entire series. Shinji is a whiny cunt throughout the entire show. Rei is a lifeless husk of a character and Asuka is a bitch with daddy issues. None of them are even remotely interesting to watch throughout the show.
My recommendation: Watch the series Rahxephon. Not only is it one of the most underrated anime in existence but it outclasses Evangelion in every conceivable way. The only reason people aren’t aware of it is because it came out after Evangelion, if it was the other way around no one would have ever batted a eye at Evangelion.
TL;DR: Watch Rahxephon and avoid the trash known as Neon Genesis Evangelion.

The claim about adult anime in the description is absolutely ridiculous, the 80s alone were full of anime geared towards adults and there even were some in the 60s (Tezuka’s sex comedies) and 70s (the early episodes of Lupin). If anything Eva is more shonen than something like 1001 Nights let alone all the super-gory and sexual 80s and early 90s OVAs.

Now people mostly talk about Asuka was the one of original tsundere character
But back then, before any -dere were a thing. Cooldere aka Rei clones were everywhere
Before Eva, Anime didn’t want to touch ‘too complicate’ topic much
Even there were politic and gore, but this type of anime were rare and had very small audience
Eva made this type of anime became part of mainstream
Eva like Dragon ball, was impacted anime industry a lot
Not as Dragon ball level, but it encourage studios to make more complex anime that wouldn’t able to air in the past

Furthermore don’t talk as if Evangelion hasn’t been licensed before. It was one of the best-selling anime when ADV films existed, I remember owning it on VHS. I was born 1 year after you and I know this. You are just shilling for the new art book.

Eva isn’t even the first mecha anime to tackle such themes, the original Gundam did it
Ideon did it. Baldios even did it. Zambot 3 did it in 1977 even.

I’m gonna be honest I’ve never seen this anime and I thought I would never ever see this anime. I heard how influential this show is and I was very intrigued mainly because of the art style. I love the art style of mid to late 90’s anime its so nostalgic it reminds me of the old school Toonami days. I also heard this show gets dark and weird and depressing towards the end so that’s also something to look forward to. Wish me luck hope I make it out alive.

I alwayes loved NGE i was glade to watch it back in days, but Chibi u said long time anims was only for kids you might be right but even back then in the 80’s and 70’s some shows are so bloody, gore, disturbing and so on even me as an adult was shook to see such shows, but thank you to tell us this I hope the dont end it in a disturbing way like they did in the anime
