The source material is much more elaborate.
Light is practically and ubermench, college kid . Very athletic , genius , we’re talking like top 1 in the country…
and he first test the book out of curiosity more than anything , but when he finds out that it works and that he actually Killed a man.
Has to start rationalizing his deed, obviously anime are a little bit over the top and dialogs are very plain, but if you can look past that you can see a lot of depth.
Light then engages in a game of mental chess with L… and they one-up eachother every second.
That’s the selling point of the anime.
Here it’s just a bad love story really, because all of the killings don’t feel meaningfull and the mental chess isn’t there, light just admits unironically to being "Kira" 3 times in this movie.
I seriously think that a pre schooler could write a better script , knowing the source material.

I highly highly highly recommend seeing the anime (also on netflix). Also, I was curious if someone who had no experience with the source material (including not even seeing the trailer) would enjoy this or not. Personally, I thought it was meh and had some good ideas (that are all from the source material for the most part) and then rushed all the main details ridiculously fast and then jammed a love story into it that was way over done (coming from a guy who generally likes a good love story) but this was just not a very good adaption.

Pretty much share the same opinion about Death Note. Just uploaded my review of it actually. Are you going to review Wind River? I had the chance to review it but was curious about your thoughts on it.

I’ll see Death Note soon. I seen the anime two years ago. I’m curious about The Guest, it’s on Netflix Canada.

Whilem Defoe’s Ryuk, was the only good thing about this movie. He skipped the source material, and nailed the character. He even said in a recent interview with IGN, that the director script wasn’t completed and was a pale comparison to the original manga/anime.

Light was supposed to be unlikable in the anime and thus movie but however where the failed was showing the scope of Kira’s power which made light a less intriguing character, also the anime didn’t have cliche highschool drama because the light was to self centered. More running time could have fixed this movie but I think Netflix will get a little bump in subscribers either way.

This film was a major failure on all fronts for me. The characters were practically unrecognizable, none of the actors really nailed their roles (Dafoe being the exception of course), and the soundtrack was just really…bland. That being said I can completely understand why some people who are unfamiliar with the source material might enjoy certain aspects of the movie, seeing as it retains the compelling premise of two individuals engaging in a battle of wits to the death. Unfortunately this Death Note never really reaches the level of sophistication and intellect it wants to portray itself as having.

I haven’t seen the anime, and I actually really enjoyed the movie. Had many issues, could’ve been better but I enjoyed the movie. Saw it twice
