I`m on a bunch of painkillers but I had fun watching this. Mind you I just looked at it like it was it`s own separate thing and I`m not saying it`s quality. Still, I get what they were going for[with the 80`s theme, the lights, the streets, the slasher movie thing] and was able to enjoy it.

If someone gave you a box set of the anime and urinated all over it right in front of you, it would be worth more than the time to watch this movie.
You can clean urine off a dvd, but you can’t erase the memory of L holding the gun from bladerunner and getting beat over the head with a 2×4 in an alley during a high speed murder chase with light TURNER played by the lead singer of the naked brothers band after he walked out of a school dance where he used a top hat to fool the authorities into thinking he was still there.

Every single problem in Death Note is pretty much because Obata wanted to make it 108 chapters long. The death of Reye penburg wife happens because Obata realized too late that she is smart enough to narrow down the search faster with the info she has. L death is again because Obata hit a wall with L and it came down to L wins earlier than he wanted or Light wins and he can extend the story so light can lose on the chapter he wanted.

This movie is just another of many examples as to why Hollyweird and the MSM west should ignore anime and video game abdications all together. This is fucking cancer and you should consider suicide if you actually enjoyed it. This makes the Mario and Dragon ball movies look like Oscar winners.

Okay, so I thought the actor playing L initially captured the personna of L…until the movie went on and he decided to go into rage mode, which L never would’ve done. So I’m thinking the writing fucked up because it had L doing things that were against character. At no point did I feel like Light was in this movie, because I never got the sense that he was an exceptionally intelligent high schooler who had any competence. The Misa character is not Misa at all. It’s a totally different character, which I’m fine with if we’re considering this a spin-off instead of an adaption with different character. I did not like how they changed Ryuk into a malevolent force, when he’s really supposed to be a bored demon who’s just curious how his experiment will play out.
That said, I liked the idea that "Light" was gaining more respect for his father as he’s discovering that right and wrong have more gray areas than he thought at first. This could’ve been a better story if it was not Light vs. L and instead the story of another human who got the death note 10 years later and through a series of events grew closer to his father after losing his mom and losing faith in the justice system. I liked Misa as the crazy "id" who actually resembles Light in the anime in her motivation to become a godlike figure. She’s an understated character at the beginning and sees the note as her chance to become significant. In my version, L would not be in the story at all, because he doesn’t fit into this new narrative. But I wasn’t impressed with this attempt to retell the story.

Light is a high school student. He could be of any nationality. The concept of death god is not uniquely Japanese either.

There are other shinigamis that just existed in the background in the original story. They could have made this take place in the same universe, with the same rules, but with a different shinigami giving the note to someone who isn’t Light.

I haven’t seen get out yet but I have read the plot and it seemed pretty stupid to me. As for how he acted in death note, for anyone who has seen L in the manga and anime, L has asperger’s and he has autistic quirks. Lakeith stanfield didnt get ANY of them right. He may have ate candy but since when has L ever been a messy eater? L also has a finger fetish where he puts his fingers in his mouth or plays with his lip. The only time i saw lakeith barefoot in a scene was in the hotel and L was known to take off his shoes when he sat down at a public place and he never wore socks. There were times that lakeith even failed to sit like L. L sits that way because if he doesn’t his deductive reasoning drops 40 percent. That means he always sits that way, always. Then there was no tea, coffee, or strawberry cake in sight. L eats cake a lot and he always has a cup whether it is tea or coffee and he is always adding sugar cubes to it. I still have no idea why they decided to dress him like a ninja but the reason why L dresses in a simple long sleeve shirt and pants is because it’s more comfortable for him. He wouldn’t be seen wearing that whatever that was over his face although he may wear a mask. The choice of candy was bad too because hes always playing and stacking them something lakeith never did in the movie. I just dont get how people say he acted like L when he didn’t get any of these things right. Kenichi matsuyama on the other hand got all the autistic quirks down and even looked like him which was a huge bonus because he looked like he stepped out of the manga himself.

Exiting deaths is actually a negative for Death Note, why? Because that’s not what Death Note is about. It isn’t some low rent Final Destination film. To prove my point, most of the deaths in the manga/anime are heart attacks. It’s secondary to the main themes, so the fact that they focus on it in such a ridiculous way in this bastardization just shows how much the filmmakers didn’t even remotely get what makes Death Note so interesting and beloved.

I guess Lakeith drew inspiration from Kingbach knocking shit over with his hand lol… I noticed he put so much emphasis on that in the movie. I see he tried to have an anime walk and how he sit nice try but the movie was still barebones.

A " rental" is still being to nicely to this piece of shit. If I was to recommend this to a person who hasn’t seen Death Note I would just tell them to watch the anime since it’s also on Netflix, just watch that instead.

Oh my god I could barely get through this. Miscasting seems like an understatement with this film. And you know what for me if they wanna do something different that’s fine but if you use original characters names and try to cherry pick things you like from their traits it won’t work. Either try to capture the spirit and the nature of the character you are using or make a new one similar to that character. Or else you get people saying "you say this is Light/L but they aren’t acting like it and they aren’t even close."

The whole story and philosophy of Death Note reminds me of the stories and philosophies of Green Goblin and Cat in the Hat combined. As for Green Goblin (aka Norman Osborn), it’s about a guy who always strives for success in his own way, and then fails, and ultimately becomes bitter about it afterwards, causing mayhem; it’s ultimately about father issues from his son Harry Osborn’s point of view. As for the Cat in the Hat, it’s about being a young person looking out the window and feeling depressed at what you see in the world outside your window, until a stranger gives you something you feel may be worth doing, even though it’s troublesome and maybe even dangerous, and your conscience (the fish) is telling you to get it out of your house before you get into trouble, and the Cat caused a lot of mess in the house, but in the end the Cat cleans up after himself, nevertheless when your mother comes home you need to answer to her, therefore it could also be about mother issues as well. There was a Dr. Seuss crossover animated movie called The Grinch Grinches the Cat in the Hat, and the Grinch for me somewhat bears a resemblance to the Green Goblin and/or vice-versa. Light Yagami was one such a person as described regarding the Goblin and the Cat, he led his father to his own death lying to him in the end, and now all that’s left is his mother to bear all the guilt of her son who turned out to be a mass murderer who supposedly wanted to change the world causing mayhem, but in the end his mess had to be cleaned up. What do you guys think?

Why didn’t they just make an original story?? Like, after what happen with Light in Japan, Ryuk wanted to see what happen in USA? My main gripe is L. He is my fave character! I don’t give a crap they changed his race as long as he embodies the spirit of the original. But this L bugged the hell out of me. He was moody, unstable, overly emotional little bitch. Manga/anime L would not have the break downs he have. And oh the ending, totally pissed me off. L wouldn’t use the Deathnote on Light. Period!! Its beneath him quite frankly. He would bring Light to justice via his mind and intellect. No matter if it took years. It is heavily suggested with the ending that L indeed used the DeathNote on Light for revenge. That’s what pissed me off the most.

I actually liked this movie because I’ve never even heard of the anime. Most of the complaints I’m hearing from people are that it didn’t follow the source material. I would like to see them review this movie as a stand alone movie instead of just reviewing it as a fan.

I think that the deaths were cool, but they missed the feel of the anime. In the anime, for "Kira" he always made it quick and made the deaths a heart attack. So for him to make them so bloody, it just wasn’t the same. And that’s partly what pissed off the fans in this field.
