PLEASE KEEP WATCHING AFTER 25. Alot of people stop, I hope you wont 🙂
Also, to explain what Light Yagami did.,
So here’s the thing. Rem gave Misa’s book to Ryuk. Ryuk gave it to Light. And Light then dropped it to the floor. But in order to be able to remember everything later, he made sure that the notebook he originally had was given to Rem so that she could find someone to use it and then later Light would take it back and get his memories back. The reason he did this was to make sure he got the book back while also over time being "cleared of suspicion."
Light is smart as hell.

Basically, the thing he did with passing the notebooks between Ryuk and Rem was to switch the notebooks between them. Now Rem is attached to Ryuk’s (or rather Light’s) notebook and Ryuk is attached to Misa’s notebook. I won’t tell you why he needed it though, you’ll see in due time 😛

REM and Ryuk had an extra notebook for Misa (gelus’) and Light (x). When it was time to relinquish ownership of the notebooks, Light had both notebooks switch ownership from REM to Ryuk and vice versa. REM was attached to Higuchi while Ryuk’s (gelus’) notebook was buried. Since there were no human attached to it he went back to the shinigami world. When it was time to get the notebooks back Light killed Higuchi then its ownership was transferred back to him and all his previous memories restored. Old Light revived. Since Misa unburried her old notebook old misa revived all her previous memories restored. Then Ryuk came back down with Misa both new owners of the notebook. This is some witchctaft sh"t right there. That to have them both be cleared of suspicion. But wait on the next one. ???

Light swapped up the Notes for three reasons: first, he needs to be sure he will get his memories back ASAP when the third Kira is caught, and he has no way of knowing whether that will be possible with the Notebook that was originally Misa’s, without testing it, which he didn’t have time for.
(As a side note, I tend to think that he would’ve gotten his memories back from either one, since Misa’s Notebook allowed him to retain his original memories even after the switch, but again, he had to be more sure than that.)
The secondary reason is because, although he doesn’t know for sure if Misa will need to do the eye deal again, he probably at least suspects that she will (since nobody can be expected to remember a name, in a foreign language, that they saw written a handful of times several months before) and so he needs Ryuk to be the Shinigami attached to her Notebook in order for the second eye deal to happen, as Rem most likely wouldn’t agree to it, out of a desire to protect Misa.
The third and perhaps most important reason, is that Light’s original Notebook has the rules written in it by Ryuk, while Misa’s Notebook doesn’t have any written rules (she learned all the rules from Rem by word-of-mouth). This is the only thing that makes Light’s gambit with the fake rules possible. If there are no written rules, then he has no way to add new ones to clear Misa or himself.
(Sorry for long comment, it’s faster to say out loud than it is to type!)
Sidenote: The next episode is gonna be fucking lit!

Realistically speaking I feel like L would have taken his watch and had all of his clothes changed, but dramatically speaking it’s fucking awesome that he’s had a piece of the note in his watch for this long.

It’s really simple. It’s so Ryuk would appear to Misa when she dug it up. Rather than Rem. Light predicted Misa might need to make the eye deal again. He knew Rem wouldn’t allow it, but Ryuk would have no problem. That was the whole point it.

What I love about this is that Light managed to not only outsmart L, but he outsmarted *himself* as well.

Light’s purpose of switching notebook is to make sure Rem is not gonna be attached to Misa once Misa recovered her memories. By doing this, Misa and Ryuk will be attached. Light knew that Misa would have already forgotten L’s true name so Misa will be forced to do the "eye deal" once again… this time with Ryuk. Rem would not have agreed to this because she cares for Misa. However, Ryuk doest give a fuck.
Now, since Rem is now attached to the task force, she will be able to see, via the CCTV, that Misa had made the eye deal with Ryuk which further halved her life. Rem is pissed. Light knew Rem will be pissed at him (Light) but Rem will not kill Light because this will hurt Misa’s feelings. Rem will obviously becomes more cautious about L instead. Thus Rem killing L in the end. By doing so, Rem also dies in the end. Had Rem did not threaten Light then it would have been more convenient for Light to just show a photo of L to Misa.
Light Yagami made this gamble and he won. Ryuk even acknowledged it.

Hey great reaction. Light would gain all his "death note related memories" back by touching/owning ANY death note. It doesn’t matter if it’s his original one or Misa’s. And as far as being touched by the notebook piece that misa brought, that was just to be able to see Ryuk. He gains no additional memories since he got them all back from higuchi’s notebook.

it’s worth noting that when Light returned the memories, he was terrified for a couple of moments, but when Misa did this, she was first slightly shaken and then was like "ehe!"
