The reveal of L is one of the greatest character reveals ever. It cements exactly who he is– extremely intelligent, resourceful, careful. And it illuminates exactly what Light is becoming– petty, impulsive, prideful. From the population of the entire world, L managed to locate Kira to one district in Japan, all because Light was so easy to bait with childish taunts. Best hero-villain interaction, and just in the beginning of the second episode.

Ryuk’s role in the series is merely that of a spectator. He doesn’t really do much aside from providing a little color commentary. The cat and mouse game between Light and L, that’s the show.

Incase you didn’t hear about it yet in the death note universe heaven and hell doesn’t exist. Everyone regardless if they are bad or good goes to a place called Mu (pronounced like moo and means "nothingness"). Ryuk just told him he wasn’t going to heaven or hell to mess with Light.

Light was already disappointed in the real world before he gets the death note…. if you pay attention on the dialogue in the first episode… everything in the news is about crimes thats why he said "the world is rotten"

This anime is a pure gem (A masterpiece imo, should I say), you’ll find it a lot more exhilarating when you sit on the fence and judge it from perspective of each of the characters’ definitions of justice equally, but that doesn’t usually happen until a couple of rewatches.

I don’t know man, the English dub makes everyone sound.. enthusiastic, especially Light. His tone and the way he speaks is a lot more serious and "darker" in Japanese, which also makes him come off as a much bigger bad-ass, so hearing him sound all enthusiastic and hero-ish in this dub after watching the sub just feels.. wrong.
That being said, you guys do you. I’m going to continue watching regardless of the dub. 🙂
