I have never gotten an exhilaration from taking wind into the mouth sticking my head out of a car. The only I ever feel is not able to breath..

I was born January 1988 and the movie my mom would put on to get me to stop crying was totoro. The reason why was because she took my cousins to see it and thought it was so sweet. So, Totoro is my life <3

GODDAMMIT I LOVE THE VEGGIE SCENE (it’s why i love them so much) BUT ALL I COULD THINK WAS THEY SHOULDN’T GIVE THEIR MOM RAW VEGGIES IF SHE’S IMMUNOCOMPROMISED AH

huh, I just assumed that Totoro was a sort of coping mechanism for the sisters, an imaginary friend to help them get over their mother being sick and them being put into a new and strange place. ^^ I really don`t want to think about the shinigami theory because this movie is a ray of sunshine everytime I feel down.

The reasons I love the hosts:
Will has such a deep passion for the movies and I love seeing that side of him.
Reina shares that passion but I love the little bits of detail and cultural tidbits that adds depth to the movies.

I need to rewatch all the ghibili movies in Japanese bc I think that’s why some of the movies didn’t hit me as hard as Princess Mononoke. The dubbed performances feel flat and emotionless for some movies.

I feel like Totoro is almost a symbol of the dad for the kids. He comes and goes mysteriously. He rides his own bus. He’s slow and sleepy–the way adults seem to energetic kids. He laughs loud like the dad did to scare away ghosts. So the big Totoro with the medium and small Totoros reminds me of Satsuki, Mei, and their dad.

I love it. Because I can sit there and watch it and it’s very calming and nostalgic. I use to go exploring as a kid. I wouldn’t go far. But, I’d end up in a completely different place. Plus with my imagination I’d literally be somewhere else like Mei.

I cry every time I watch Totoro. It is so sweet but has real fears in it. Like getting lost or losing someone you love. I love hitting tree branches with my umbrella when it rains ??

I see you’re focusing on Ghibli movies lately. Does this relate to Ghiblifest ’18 with AMC theaters playing one movie a month? I’ve watched all so far, but will miss Pom Poko this Father’s Day.

I always had a love hate relartionshio with the dark theory.
Yes it does kinda work that Mai died but as someone that just hates un needed added drama having your youngest kid die while you’re at the hospital is just too dark for Totoros kind fo feeling.
If the mum wasn’t ill or if they never got the call that he has to rush over there bcs she took a bad turn then yes maybe.
But then I read more and more on the theory and learned about the very similar murder that took place in the the towns that were kind of an inspiration and that really made it a no for me. Miyazaki would never use the horrible death of children to make a movie.
I personally like to think of it as a simple journey they took. It wasn’t a "oh she got lost and then got found haha" kinda thing but she with the help of Totoro, got to deliver the corn from the start to her mom. Also that they just laughed and watched was so much more beautiful to me than them running in there so late at night. This way it ended on everyone smilling and not at them being scolded, the mum stressing and every in the town being worried out of their mind starting to maybe really think she drowned. While it could be a nice way to look at death I think Totoro is much better seen as the casual happiness life provides us with as we live on than another turn on the end.

i guess my problem with the mvoie is that i was overhyped. and when i watched it’s just a good slice of life with a bit of fantasy . it’snot princess mononoke or spirited away lvl

I’ve always heard about "dark Totoro" but never got more details on what that meant, so hearing it now and that it was coupled with Grave of the Fireflies (which wrecked my whole world when seeing it the first time) it’s both fascinating and totally heartbreaking!
