First of all, Pun-pun reference? Mixed feelings about that.
I wish they didn’t beat you over the head with character development in this first episode… I feel like in the old show one of the things they did best was only explain just enough of the character to make you sure you don’t really understand them, but you do understand why they’re so frustrated with everything. These new characters, worst of all, seem to lack actual problems, which is annoying, but to be fair the original did set a ridiculously high bar when it came to writing complex and believable characters with relatable issues. Both of the new mains pretty much just announce who they are, and just in case you didn’t get it the new alien chick literally explains the main girl’s only notably interesting personality trait, (her unhealthy coping mechanism) to us within her first sixty seconds of screen time… That being said I think it’ll get more interesting the more it goes on. That’s my biggest problem do far, and as for what it did right that OPENING SCENE OH MY GOD THE PILLOWS AND THE AVA-ESQUE BAD ASS ROBOT COMING OUT OF HER HEAD AND FUCKING FLYING AT THE IRON HANDS WAS EVERYTHING I HOPED FOR AND MORE AND I UNDERSTOOD YOUR TEARS ON A SPIRITUAL LEVEL!!!! FLCL IS BAAAACK!!!
