Grave of the Fireflies is a 1988 Japanese animated war film based on the 1967 semi-autobiographical short story of the same name by Akiyuki Nosaka. It was written and directed by Isao Takahata, and animated by Studio Ghibli for the story’s publisher Shinchosha Publishing. The film stars Tsutomu Tatsumi, Ayano Shiraishi, Yoshiko Shinohara and Akemi Yamaguchi. Set in the city of Kobe, Japan, the film tells the story of two siblings, Seita and Setsuko, and their desperate struggle to survive during the final months of the Second World War.

"Grave Of The Fireflies" is a superb film. I highly recommend it even though it is not an easy watch compared to the works of Hayao Miyazaki. It is sombre in tone by comparison.

I’ve seen a lot of truly rubbish promos for anime of different stripes in the west, especially SG… and this is not one of them. Very nice editing job and avoids going wildly over the top 🙂
However, the question I clicked thru here from Film4 with… was not answered. Is May 24th the ONLY date the double bill is being shown, or just the opening day? And if it is only this Friday, is it a single performance or several? It’s not the school holidays yet and I’m at work, so a matinee’s no good…
