Japanese culture and beliefs are interesting. I love how spiritual concepts are integrated in their lifestyle. Their culture seems to be welcoming of spiritual beliefs and display a healthy understanding of the spiritual realm. I say this because people tend to associate evil with any and everything that’s spiritual instead of a more balanced understanding of the spiritual realm. For example, the word "Totoro" is said to be a kid’s mispronunciation of the word "Tororo" which in English is the word Troll. Most people tend to think of a horrific looking monster that eats humans but in this movie, the ‘troll" is a protective, forest, spirit.

Catbus and Totoro also seemed to be representative of Psychopomps. Psychopomps are creatures, spirits, angels, or deities in many religions whose responsibility is to escort spirits to the other side. Their role is not to judge the deceased, but simply to guide them. Appearing frequently on funerary art, psychopomps have been depicted at different times and in different cultures as anthropomorphic entities, horses, deer, dogs, whip-poor-wills, ravens, crows, vultures, owls, sparrows, and cuckoos. Psychologically, a psychopomp is a mediator between the unconscious and conscious realms. It is symbolically personified in dreams as a wise man or woman, or sometimes as a helpful animal.

Overall, I loved the depiction of a child’s innocence, I enjoyed the balanced understanding of the spiritual realm and it’s inhabitants, and the depiction of the union of the people within the community.

You all mentioned this as well but there were many allusions to "Alice in Wonderland" in this movie also. The white rabbit, falling down the rabbit hole, the cat, etc. Traveling through the subconscious mind.
