You say that Ashitaka is a protagonist that doesn’t seem to have a lot of agency, and he doesn’t have a big character arc, but I don’t think that’s exactly it.
It’s not that Ashitaka is going with the flow or being pushed around, it’s that he’s trying to strike a balance between humanity and nature. He says something to the effect of "Is there no way for us to co-exist?" several times in the movie. At the end, he says to San, "You live in the forest, and I’ll live in the ironworks". That seems to me like a metaphorical marriage between mankind and nature, with the masculine Ashitaka being a symbol humankind, and the feminine San being a symbol for nature. Meaning: the ideal arrangement is communion and marriage between them, not competition.

This is awesome. I literally cannot wait to hear your thoughts on The studio Ghibli series. Spirited away is my favorite, but it’s been so long since I’ve seen princess mononoke that I need to go back and revisit it. Thanks for the thoughtful great in-depth reviews!

I saw Princess Mononoke twice in cinema when it was released.
It was even more astounding on the big screen with a real Dolby system.

when i was a child and i saw this movie for the first time it was a
realy good movie for me back then, i realy liked the hand drawing, the
view of the forest, the idea of a injured man traveling worldwide and
searching for a forest god to cure him, but when i saw the movie 15
years later, the convesation between the characters seems boring, not
funny or intresting enough for me to get excited from the movie before
the action begins, i also felt like i cant realy relate to the
characters in the movie. i think that the director could make the
coversations between the characters way more intresting, with better
sense of humor, and with better responds to each other, to make you as a
viewer to realy connect to the movie.

I love the environmental commentary Hayao Miyazaki makes in Princess Mononoke. It’s more subtle in Nausicaa but equally impresive.
If you’re impressed by the use of colour in Mononoke, then you’ll love Zhang Yi Mo’s films (Hero, House of Flying Daggers, Shadow to name a few). The use of colour is both symbolic and atmospheric.

Ashitaka is the royal blood boyscout. He has incredibly strong moral’s from the get-go due to the living condition’s of his people, and his role as an adept warrior/hunter as well. His way of life is more necessity than anything greedy like the resident’s of Iron Town. He’s the perfect middleman for both sides since he can afford to see the pro’s and con’s of both sides views. Both sides believe their way of existence is just, and the other is the archaic thorn in the other’s paw.

I would LOVE to hear what you think of Kiki’s Delivery Service. It’s not a plot focused film, but the scenery is gorgeous and it’s character driven and about growth and the awkward time of adolescence.

I rewatched Princess Mononoke with my 8 year old niece and she loved it. Now she wants to go as San this Halloween. She also said she wishes she could have her own Yakul, which I also wish I could have!

It’s the closest simulation of reading a long epic fantasy novel.

I think Nausicaa is Ghibli’s greatest fantasy/scifi. The world has a lot of detail, the forest is fascinating, the story is tight and well paced, and the characters are well written.

As a protagonist Ashitaka is a lot like Captain America. He starts a great guy and ends as a great guy. No growth, right? The thing is that’s not the point. The "job" of both of these characters is to act like a mirror to the others, pointing out their flaws and subsequent growth.

Amazing fact it will blow you mind the girl named kaya at the start of the movie is actually ashikata fiance who gave him the locket. Also it is completely confirmed that she was pregnant with his kid. And his descendent from her passed down his legend. The movie name was first supposed to be legend of ashikata. That is why he has more screen time then monoke. You can even check the wiki fandom of girl name kaya it is real. The japanese women hated his character for him being a cheater. He was shown as brother to her for the western audience. Go check the fandom page of girl named kaya.

Princess Mononoke is in my top 3 Studio Ghibli films. One of their earlier films – Nausicca also has an environmental theme and sits right alongside PM for feels and majesty (Patrick Stuart voices a character in the English language dub). If you are feeling to keep on that theme, Laputa Castle in the Sky is another one of their early releases that fits perfectly next to PM and N.

Hi! I love your videos and I really recommend Spirited Away, My Neighbor Totoro, Nausicaa of the Valley of the Wind, and Laputa: Castle in the Sky!
p.s. I couldn’t help but cringe at how you pronounced Studio Ghibli
in japan it’s pronounced as ji-bu-ri, "translating" this to english it’s pronounced like jibli (g=j)
as someone who grew up in an english-japanese household, trust me! it’s pronounced jibli 🙂

Nice video Daniel. I saw the film and liked it, but I’m not quite sure why. I enjoyed the world building and mythology, but I failed to get a sense of structure. I heard somewhere that in Japan storytelling is not structured as in the West. Can someone explain this further?
