Princess Mononoke (Japanese: もののけ姫, Hepburn: Mononoke-hime) is a 1997 Japanese animated epic historical fantasy film written and directed by Hayao Miyazaki, animated by Studio Ghibli for Tokuma Shoten, Nippon Television Network and Dentsu, and distributed by Toho. The film stars the voices of Yōji Matsuda, Yuriko Ishida, Yūko Tanaka, Kaoru Kobayashi, Masahiko Nishimura, Tsunehiko Kamijo, Akihiro Miwa, Mitsuko Mori and Hisaya Morishige.
Princess Mononoke is set in the late Muromachi period of Japan (approximately 1336 to 1573 CE), but it includes fantasy elements. The story follows a young Emishi prince named Ashitaka, and his involvement in a struggle between the gods of a forest and the humans who consume its resources. The term mononoke (物の怪), or もののけ, is not a name, but a Japanese word for supernatural, shape-shifting beings that possess people and cause suffering, disease, or death.

Naussicaa of the Valley of the Wind is another great environmental theme that Studio Ghibli has done. I hope you get a chance to watch that one. It’s set in a post apocalyptic world and industrial society has collapsed, with gigantic bugs in a toxic wilderness.

This was one of my absolute favourite movies growing up. Must have seen it for the first time in 2002 or 2003 when I was around 12 years old. Princess Mononoke was such a badass, AND she was living with a pack of huge ass wolves – what more could a 12 y/o girl want in a hero 😀 Not sure if it’s the same in other countries, but around here it would usually be on TV every year at Christmas (and only then iirc).

You can’t go wrong with any of Hayao Miyazaki’s films, every single one is phenomenal, and I would greatly encourage you to watch his entire catalog!!! His other works that have great environmental themes are, Castle in the Sky, Ponyo and Nausicaa in the Valley of the Wind.

13:18 – “You have to find some balance between what the humans need from the world’s resources to actually survive and keeping the planet in tact for the other creatures that live here.”
This is the perfect description of the movie’s core theme. Balance is necessary, and both sides have good & bad to them (as we see so perfectly with Lady Eboshi’s town). Going too far either way hurts the other side, which isn’t something positive to strive for. Nature needs to exist and thrive, but so does humanity. If we can achieve that balance, both sides will prosper. I love that this movie doesn’t just needlessly hate on humanity for how it treats nature, but shows the truths of both perspectives. It makes it’s messages come across better than just blind one-sidedness. Miyazaki’s fantastic at this.

FUN FACT: The Emishi people were a real ethnic group that were fully conquered by the Japanese in the 9th century and then were assimilated. They were amazing horse riders/archers and are speculated by some to be the starting point of what we would recognize as what a “samurai” is.

One of Studio Ghibli’s best. It avoids the simplistic binary good/bad approach, by making Lady Eboshi (wrong-headed as she is at the start of the tale) as honest, courageous and loyal as our two young heroes.
Plus, the ladies of Iron Town are both formidable and fun!

All the movies of Miyazaki have an environment message in some instance in them.
About the matriarchy, not so sure, it is more that in many Miyazaki films there is a strong female character which is one of his trademarks.
The Miyazaki and/or Ghibli films you have to watch:
Nausicaa of the valley of the wind. With strong environmental themes and a strong central female character, this is the film whose success enabled Miyazaki and Isao Takahata to create Ghibli studio and even though it is not a ‘ghibli’ film, it definitely is the blueprint for a lot of Ghibli output.
Laputa – Castle in the sky.
The first ‘official’ Ghibli movie. With hints of Science Fiction, this is a great adventure flick again exploring Miyazaki’s interests, flying, strong female characters and balance between human technology and nature.
Must see is Miyazaki first feature film. Lupin the 3rd, The castle of Cagliostro. Towards the end it does have an environment message but it is mostly a heist and adventure film and it is a blast from start to finish.
Less centered on environment (but definitely with the theme underlying as well as central character being a woman) are the excellent My Neighbor Totoro (just magical), Kiki’s delivery service (love this movie) and Spirited away (the best animated movie ever). Howl’s moving castle is also worth the watch be it for the castle alone, a true animated marvel.
Of Isao Takahata I strongly suggest Grave of the fireflies (but do prepare several boxes of tissues before you watch it), Pom Poko about a group of shapeshifting magical tanukis (a tanuki is a sort of raccoon dog that inhabits the Japanese islands) who use their abilities to fight human development destroying their natural habitat.
This movie has a lot of heart and A LOT of humour and the tanukis use their balls as weapons. Yes, you read that right.
Also Takahata last film before his passing, The tale of the Princess Kaguya based on an ancient Japanese folk tale about a baby found inside a bamboo by an old couple who is the daughter of the moon.
The film is made with animated stills drawn in watercolor, simply breathtaking.

The English version “nobody knows your heart”is also great, but does not come close.

The girl at the beginning isn’t Asihtaka’s sister, it’s a translation error, since Ashitaka is older than her, she calls him nii-san, but they aren’t related, she gave him the necklace because she’s in love with him 🙂
*Princess Mononoke* is among my favorite Ghibli movies, maybe my favorite alongside *The Castle in the Sky* , I’m a sucker for treasure hunt, plus with war themes explored 🙂 But I also love the most unknown ones, like *Whisper of the Heart* and *Only Yesterday* for example 🙂

Watching this movie, people always take side with the Nature and think the humans are bad, when everyone is the same, it’s like symmetry and Ashitaka is the center, he said it, he travels far to gaze upon the world without hatred, he tries to be perfectly partial… and as viewers we should try to be in his shoes instead of taking side…
Okkoto the boar and Lady Eboshi are exactly the same character but on 2 different sides, taking care of their people, trying to live in the world fighting back the enemy, yet most of the audience sides more on the Nature side. The battle where Okkoto went too far and let his hate take over happened offscreen and he died quickly before the climax; so we think of him as a victim, when he made himself the victim by desperately going to war instead of searching for peace, when Eboshi has more screentime where we see her wrongs and going the same way, she also is desperate, trying to kill the Forest God to have peace with the emperor (when he backstabbed her) but she had redemption and let her hate go for a small cost, in the end she was the better character…
When we think about it, Eboshi built a settlement peacefully, respecting nature at first, cutting trees only because her people needed it, but Nago the boar at the beginning openly started the war first by attacking the humans, Eboshi only defended herself… Of course looking for a responsible is useless in war, that’s not what the movie is teaching

I think the wolf mother described her as ugly yet beautiful because she is human and she thinks that part of her is ugly, but she is her daughter and loves her and thinks she’s beautiful for who she is not what she is. Simply put she hates what she is but loves who she is

This is one of my favorite movies of all time, but I just can’t watch it with the lesser writing and dialog of the English dub… The story and characters are so much better in the direct translation, so my recommendation is the JP audio with English subtitles.

I liked this one(all of them actually). My favourite one, however, is Nausicaa of the Valley of the Wind. Though it is technically pre-ghibli. I’d recommend the non-Miramax version. “Grave of the Fireflies” and “The Wind Rise” are very good ones too.

Another very mature Ghibli movie you could watch is Grave of the Fireflies. But if you’re going to watch it you should know that it is brutal, and incredibly heart breaking. It’s a beautifully tragic film and it’s the only movie that can make me cry every time I watch it without fail so be prepared for that.
