If you want recommendations, the show Cowboy Bebop is generally considered to be the greatest anime you’ll find ; everyone’s taste is different of course, but it’s a top tier classic, if anything else. It’s a good watch for newcomers of the genre because it contains a lot of Western influences, so the transition is pretty seamless.

I was crying bcs of that ending when i saw it for the first time and im still sad about it even though it ended in happy way, bcs it just felt like she didnt even want to leave, or that she wanted to see Haku again, sadly there is not Spirited away 2, which i feel is something that i really need 😀😀

If you want to get into a more adult but still amazing anime films you should try “perfect blue” and “paprika”

There is a big poster in my classroom (my film theory class) that lists all the greatest films in different genres and these are both listed in the top ten , doesn’t mean that much, but I think that these two films are really amazing but definitely a more mature and thriller

Thank you for uploading your proper reaction elsewhere, letting us enjoy that and coming back to your YT channel for a full analysis and discussion. I’ve heard how difficult Studio Ghibli can be with all that stuff, so this is ideal in so many ways. Love your analysis and retrospective on the film afterwards, please keep it up. It’s a like/subscribe from me and a keen wait for your next upload. PS. Found your channel through the Watchmen reaction, which is one of my favourite comic book films and found it equally great.

Well of me it’s Princess Mononoke, Nausica of the Valley, Spirited Away, Howl’s moving castle, Kiki’s delivery service, and castle in the sky as my go to Ghibli movie. I got my kids watching those. There are also the classics like Porco Rosso, Cat’s Return and My Neighbor totoro. All are good, they all have some moral that kids related to.

If you have time, watch Nausica, Kiki’s and Howl’s moving castle. You’ll like those.

And I always recommend Cowboy Beepbop, Trigun and Claymore as my go to animes for people to watch. Real good stories.

This movie was my childhood and ever since then, I have been equally freaked out and in love with it. I’m so glad you decided to react to it! Thanks for the awesome video 🙂

I actually don’t know what most of the movie is supposed to mean, but I think that No Face is supposed to represent an unfulfilled person who feels hollow inside but doesn’t know what they are missing. So No Face kept asking others about their desire and tried to understand them. Whenever someone was just being greedy without purpose, he got angry and ate them. Chihiro was different because she was never greedy. She was a person who knew who she was and what she needed, which is why I believe he became so obsessed with her. After following her, he found a place where he could stay and help someone, a place to belong.

This is the best Ghibli film I fear… but all of them are so good so it literally doesn’t matter. There are so many recent anime films that are really good as well, A Silent Voice and Weathering With You are two of my personal favorites.

  20. Dalila Munoz
    April 16, 2021 @ 4:16 pm

I don’t think no face was purposely trying to be evil but wanted acceptance and I think that’s why no face produced gold or fake gold to be able to be accepted and for everyone to pay attention but when she denied the gold that’s what surprised no face since everyone else went crazy to get more gold and as for which my favorite movie I’m not sure that’s a hard one since I grew up watching all the films and some are emotional and others are sweet and happy like ponyo is funny and a cute film but The Tale of The Princess Kaguya is more emotional than the two films you’ve seen so far.

I’ll list some Ghibli movies to tell which ones I consider more dense, like Princess Mononoke, and which ones are more “light”, more like Spirited Away
    – Light ones: Howl’s Moving Castle, Kiki’s Delivery Service; Porco Rosso; Ponyo; Arietty (these first are more fantastic/fantasy movies); Whisper of the Heart, From Up On Poppy Hill; The Wind Rises; When Marnie Was There (these last ones are not fantastic/fantasy ones, I don’t know how to describe it in english sorry LOL)
    – More dense movies: The Tale of Princess Kaguya; Nausicaa of the Valley of the Wind; Grave of the Fireflies; Castle in the Sky.

I think that it might also be a sort of commentary on greed, especially with her parents being turned into literal pigs and no face sort of feeding off of the greed and selfish desire of everyone around him. But when it came to Chihiro and her response in rejecting the food and no face’s offerings, I think that it was also saying something about childlike innocence or sincerity or the meaning and ultimate consequence of being genuine in how it can affect others as well as yourself

This has been my favorite movie since I saw it back in 2002/2003, i saw it when i was 6/7 w my best friend, and, to me, it is still the epitome of animation. Spirited Away is what made me fall in love with art and animation, Hayao Miyazaki is also a master storyteller.

  35. Bia Araújo
    April 16, 2021 @ 5:38 pm

A thing that I love about Spirited Away is that you just get immersed into the world they build. Some aspects of the world are so crazy and you don’t understand because is not necessarily explained to you, but that’s the thing: Chihiro entered this living world with living characters that have their own stories, relationships and culture that existed before she was there. That world didin’t started existing after she was in it, it exists beyond Chihiro. So even though you don’t understand every single aspect it makes the world more belivable because every single detail builds it up.

Most of the Hayao Miyazaki anime are tied up with enviromental topics like pollution, and destroying our planet. In Spirited Away you could see the Stink/River God as a representation of how much trash people disposes in rivers and landfil… as to ‘No-Face’ spirit he has powers of mimic, absorbing and alchemy but he is lonely, he can’t enter the bathhouse so when Chichiro was kind to him (she leave the door open for him, inviting him in), he started to help her and then wanted to gain her interest by proposing gold made from mud (alchemy) etc…as to him turning evil in bathouse, as I mentioned one of his powers was mimic abilities and absorbtion, he learned that gold is important as the workers in bathhouse was greedy and after swalowing the Aogaeru (the frog), NoFace absorbed his personality, start to speak in his voice due to the mimic abilities. He is not evil from nature, he just mimic the behaviours of creatures around him…. that’s his treats as a No-Face, his name is adequate, he is NoFace so he is influenced by the majority of his surroundings, in bathhouse it was mostly greed…

So my take on the movie is it’s about the little girl overcoming internal struggles. She is afraid losing friends leaving behind a familiar place she used to call home. Fear of making new friends and dealing with a traumatic experience in almost drowning. Within the spirit world she steadily overcomes all these things. First the viewer experiences fear of the unknown. Watching her parents transform because they are lost in dealing with the move themselves and forgetting about the girls care. She meets the boiler man who is teaching her perseverance. The water spirit represents payoff in perseverance . Yubaba is general fair and how its debilitating her in growth. No face represented Greed and selfishness. She overcame him by not giving in to temptation and feeling sorry for him. Haku represents hope and bravery. She overcame her trauma of drowning and found new bravery in dealing with change. The baby is her inner self first hiding and selfishly needy. Later learns to control her self more and even stand up to her fears. In the end she found all of these things to start fresh.

Nausicaa: of the Valley of the Wind, and Lupin the 3rd: the Castle of Cagliostro are also fantastic, but they are much less light-hearted, like Princess Mononoke.

I’d like to recommend The Wind Rises (another ghibli movie)
Also I remember going to the released of this movie on theatres and it was amazing. And watching it again as an adult I love picking on this themes about being afraid and lost or the feeling that you’re on your own. Having to face new circumstances.
What I feel about No-Face is that he’s a spirit that feeds on greed or on behaviours. Like, Chihiro only takes what she needs while others ask for more and they never seem to be fulfilled and I think that’s why No-Face acquires parts of them as he eats them (the frog legs, the different voices, the need) and that’s why it wasn’t a good place for him to stay. As he healed and threw up and stayed with Yubaba’s twin it shows how different he is.

My absolute favorite studio ghibli movie is Howl’s Moving Castle!!! I also really love Ponyo, Arietti, Kiki’s Delivery Service, My Neighbor Totoro….a lot of the lighter ones. But all studio ghibli is awesome and I never get tired of watching them again and seeing others experience them for the first time. I’ve always been a big fan of animation but the work of Miyazaki and Satoshi Kon are the reasons I fell in love with the medium. The music of ghibli especially elevates it for me. It’s hard to narrow down my favorite pieces across all the movies, however I can say with confidence my favorite overall soundtrack is from Howl’s Moving Castle (very biased opinion here I know). I can’t wait to see you react to Howl’s Moving Castle. I hope you like it and the other studio ghibli movies you decide to watch. They’re really special.

Spirited Away is one of the few movies to win against Disney at the Academy Awards, and it is still known as one of the best animated films in history. It’s one of the last movies Hayao Miyazaki participated actively in, including the writing, directing, and character creation for it. In my opinion, Miyazaki is a genius, and he’s perhaps my biggest inspiration in life.
Miyazaki’s movies are for all ages, but imo, they always resonate more with older folk; his movies often are a social commentary. Princess Monoke the risks of extreme industrialism and capitalism, what happens when we stray too far from nature, life requires balance, we must respect nature. Spirited Away represents the change from childhood to adulthood, growing up, but also what happens with extreme consumerism, we take and take and take, and so the parents become pigs. Capitalism has made us forget to take only what we need, we always over-eat, overbuy. Hayao also loves creating female heros with no true enemy, he loves girls who win through bravery, kindness, and friendship, who do not need men to save them, but that help each other out towards a goal.
I think you’d enjoy Howl’s Moving Castle which is based on the french book by the same name.

One of the main themes (in my opinion) is greed. Her parents were greedy by eating food that wasn’t meant for them and they got turned into pigs. Everyone in the bathhouse was greedy, which made them unfriendly and some of them got eaten by No Face. No Face became greedy as he entered the bathhouse which literally turned him into a monster. Haku was greedy learning all he could from Yubaba and it nearly got him killed… So yeah I’d say this movie is a great lesson to not be greedy. Also to just love one another and learn to be selfless

I love this film. I’m so glad you mentioned Joe Hisaishi’s music, its absolutely stunning in all the Ghibli movies. The song at the end is beautiful “Itsumo Nando Demo” – Always with me. The scene on the train uses a thing called ‘ma’ which is time to breathe. Just gentle music and stunning visuals.

If you ever have a chance to go to Japan, I suggest you visit the Ghibli museum! Its such a gem! Its such a nice place to spend a day, and its in such a beautiful park too. You will feel very refreshed, and your wallet will be empty by the end of it! Just make sure to book ahead, because they will not let you in if you haven’t. This movie is so sweet and emotional. It’s hard for me to pick a favorite. Howl’s Moving Castle is incredible, and Princess Mononoke is definitely in my top 3. But I think Nausicaa is a truly underrated masterpiece. Technically it’s pre-Ghibli, but it is by Miyazaki. It’s stunning and I love the message and Nausicaa’s journey. What an awesome reaction video! Thank you for giving this one a watch! This was my favorite studio ghibli film as a child (along with Howl’s Moving Castle) and I couldn’t tell you what it means either. I feel like the lessons i learned from this movie are so deep and emotional that it couldn’t put it into words. However, I have heard a theory that No Face was following a theme of “whatever you give to him, he gives back” and since he was in an environment of pure greed (the bath house), then he took on those values.

Kiki’s Delivery Service and Whisper of the Heart are two that i hope you really like!!

I love this anime very much. I was like 14 or 15 when I first time watched in theatre. It’s like Miyazaki touched my soul) nowadays it still the best for me. On the second place “Howl’s Moving Castle”. 🥰❤️

I found this on google and I hope this isn’t true:(
“Haku is already dead at the start of Spirited away- he is a riverspirit and ‘dies’ when his river is filled in/redirected. That’s how he ended up with Yubaba in the first place. However, death is different for spirits. Chihiro releasesHaku from Yubaba’s service, which releases his soul. Someone says that the moment whenChihiro’s hairband which Zeniba gave her shines, it’s the tears of Haku when he dies.”

I don’t know if anyone has told you, but the reason the sweeping scenes in Miyazaki films (like the grass one in here) are so gorgeous is because they hand paint every frame for those moments. That studio is full of meticulous artists thanks to Miyazaki himself. This one is the only one to catch the eye of America awards and is the reason some Miyazaki films are loved even by people who do not normally care for anime or animated films.

I adore Miyazaki. This one, Howl’s Moving Castle, The Secret World of Arietty, From Up On Poppy Hill, Laputa: Castle in the Sky, and Kiki’s Delivery Service are probably my favourites. The sound tracks are always perfect as well. Can’t wait to see you do more!

I repeat myself but I enjoy your reactions so much. It’s like watching my favourite movies with a friends really.
And seeing you marvel at the flawless and vivid animation and cooing over how beautiful these movies are makes my heart melt.

One of my favorite quotes from Miyazaki about his work is – “I’ve become skeptical of the unwritten rule that just because a boy and girl appear in the same feature, a romance must ensue. Rather, I want to portray a slightly different relationship, one where the two mutually inspire each other to live—if I’m able to, then perhaps I’ll be closer to portraying a true expression of love.” – so much of his work is beyond description / analysis and it never gives you an “answer” but you can always feel this at the heart.

Oh god, I don’t think I could pick a favourite Ghibli film… A bunch of them appeal to me for different reasons… I still need to see a few of them… But I believe I should suggest you watch Grave of the Fireflies, followed up by My Neighbour Totoro. They were apparently originally shown as a double feature, I think… And if you do watch Grave of the Fireflies, it makes sense to follow it up with something light-hearted like Totoro… Not that Grave of the Fireflies would in any way not be a lovely, fun, cheerful film >_>;; lol.

If you are still taking recommendations, one I have not seen being mentioned is One Piece Movie 6: Baron Omatsuri and the secret island. It requires no prior knowledge of the show, has an amazing, mature plot and is directed by one of Japans best directors, it is really worth a watch

yeah, Spirited Away is my favourite Ghibli movie; the only problem it has it’s the plot, but honestly everything else is soo good the plot doesn’t really matter all that much.

This was a really great analysis of what “Spirited Away” was actually about. https://youtu.be/tkxR1TcG4n4?t=3

I’m late, but I wanted to say how happy I am that you’re discovering the joys of anime movies and series! I’ve loved Anime since I watched it on scuffed-up VHS tapes taped off old tv in the seventies! (I watched it in the nineties, but the tapes were ancient)

in the spirit realm, people could easily get lost with all the temptations(and things they haven’t seen before), Yubaba taking people’s name from them, and soon they even forget who they really are themselves is almost like a metaphor of people getting lost on the way to what they’ve been chasing for, forgot what has inspired them in the beginning and instead just chasing without a purpose.

The latest studio ghibli anime I’ve watched was Princess Kaguya. It is totally different from these three or any other studio ghibli anime they’ve done.
