22:15 in the Japanese version, one of the directors had asked the voice actor to describe (as far as I remember): how she would feel in a scenario where she had woken up and there was a creepy guy in her room that is capable of (let’s just call it) "disgusting" acts at any time, but instead he chooses to just stay in the room while looming (in a way) and watching her.
to which the voice actor had responded with "disgusting" or "Kimochi warui" which in Japanese has many ways in which it can be used and in different contexts as well

I recommend to check out this Reddit page if you wish if not know more at least understand more because I myself don’t understand this word as much as anyone else (who does not speak Japanese)

It’s an alternate reality of how the end of Eva shows at the end Shinj created multiple universes after third impact and the rebuild is a reset but different

13:44 Fact: Those very quick flashes of text were letters of support and death threats sent to Gainax. There’s even photos of graffiti that were sprayed onto Gainax’s HQ.

Yo watch the rebuilds of Eva now , its a whole different story that takes place in an alternate reality created just after the events of the end of evangelion , it’s a sequel and a spinoff at the same time

"Did they hook up?" Unsure, equal chance ‘yes’ or ‘no, those shots are just Freudian’. Amusing note, Spike Spencer and Tiffany Grant (the ADV voice actors for Shinji and Asuka) once did an AIDS awareness advertisement together and the audio sounds hilariously like Asuka gave Shinji a STD.

That whole sequence is a consequence of Shinji and Asuka both having feelings fr each other, but their traumas pushing them apart.

And yup, that’s where the meme comes from.

    And cue the song!

Isn’t it chilling that Gendo is basically a grown up Shinji?

Some folks believe the bite was a painful introduction to Gendo’s Instrumentality, others believe it was him being barred from the collective mind.

I had a good laugh at the Christmas Reis comment. Well played, guys, well played.

The three women in the IRL sequence are Misato, Rei & Auska’s voice actresses.

Shinji’s words to his mother basically mean, he doesn’t know where to find his happiness, but he now believes he can try. That’s it’s not just futile.

It’s widely believed that Shinji choked Auska to confirm they were back in reality, because in Instrumentality nothing ‘bad’ was allowed to happen. Meanwhile for Asuka she woke up to find the Completionist straddling her with his hands around her throat.

So, in the final tally: Shinji and Asuka are alive, but the rest of humanity can return if they wish to. Lillith is dead and Lillith’s clone is out in space along with the Lance of Longinus so no one can invoke another Impact. The returning human race need to be able to live and eat so there must be some way to reverse the red seas etc. All in all, this is a happy ending even if in a really weird roundabout way.

Thanks for reacting to this one, it was great watching you guys laugh and WTF through it all.

The fourth and final of the Rebuild movies comes out late June in Japan so probably 3 months or so after that before it comes out in the west, so if you want to knock them all out at once (1.11, 2.22, 3.33 & 3.0 + 1.0) you’ll probably have till September-ish. I’m sure your brains will have recovered by then 😉

Sorry I’m late watching this! Had to go back to the USA for some family stuff and missed a week’s worth of YouTube content. Looks like everything has already been explained for you guys though! So my job is done 😛 If you have any other unresolved questions regarding Eva, let me know! Also, you guys should definitely watch the Rebuild movies, especially after freshly watching the original series. You’ll notice the subtle differences in the first film, and the huge differences in the second film… and then a completely new story arc in the 3rd film (which concludes in the upcoming 4th film).

The first movie in the re-built version is very similar to the original story, but the second movie is completely different from the original story, and the third movie is a completely different animation, and it’s much more hopeful and focused on action than the original story.

Basically after everyone turned to orange juice, Rei let Shinji choose if people could bring themselves back or not.
Asuka and Shinji were to first to come back, but Shinji after everything didn’t know what was real and what wasn’t.
No idea why he thought strangling Asuka was the way to figure all that out though.

Dont worry, Shinji becomes a powerful shonen hero in the new movies. (Im not joking, you will prefer that version of Shinji)

The real life dream sequence I think is supposed to show that Instrumentality is not reality the same way the movie you’re watching, The End of Evangelion itself, is not real. The same way that we guys are separated from reality by watching people in a fantasy (them characters in the movie), the people in the movie are separated from reality by also watching people in a fantasy (us movie watchers, or Evangelion fans). It’s the movie reminding you the viewer that what you’re watching is a fantasy much like Instrumentality is for the characters you’re watching.

The best explanation I can come up with for the last scene (after watching this movie like 10x) is that Shinji is still just so desperate and afraid of being ignored that him choking Asuka is still just him trying to force her to pay attention to him. I think some people are in denial about Shinji being abusive and try to overthink it, but that’s the only explanation I have that makes sense to me.

As much as I love Eva, I think the ending is kind of bad (but in a cool way I guess). Thematically, Eva is basically about NEETs and anime nerds needing to grow up, go outside, meet people, maybe attend group therapy, etc. but it seems so pessimistic about the prospect of that actually leading to happiness. It’s the last anime you’d want to have a try-hard edgy ending but how could it not?
