FLCL Progressive Episode 1 Thoughts and Review
Yes it is here the television program that has people both really happy and extremely pissed off, tune in to Fither’s weird maniac review where I think way too hard about the show. Reviews of this may or may not continue it depends.

My take was that its about how much people sit and wait for something exciting and meaningful to fall into their lap. So they shut off and ignore their pain but the relief never comes and instead of being saved they just rot.
Harruko is the exciting thing that just lands on their doorstep. The kids are cheering for the seeming deliverance from their passive existence waiting for something to happen.

The first episode looked and sounded great. The scenes were the had the same ambiguous tone of the original, and I hope that it goes in that meta sort of sequel that this video suggests.

I want to be pandered to. I fucking loved this episode!
But honestly it’s no way to please everyone. I’ve seen comments asking where is Naota is he coming? But at the same time people will complain about it being to similar when he isn’t there. Like with Star Wars TFA brought back Han and Chewey it was criticized for relying on old characters the cast should be all new. There is no way to please everyone.

I actually really liked dropping Little busters at the end because it emphasizes a different part in the context of the new season. In the original it underscores how Protag had grown and could take care of himself heading forward. In this season it underscores that MC-headphones isn’t there yet.
Once again, not sure if it was intended but that’s how it reads to me.

The real question is why is the main girl wearing headphones during class? She isn’t even wearing them on her shoulders or anything, she is just wearing them. How is she going to pass the class if she can’t hear the teacher over Insane Clown Posse?

I enjoyed the episode. I think it’s doing the same thing as rebuild of Evangelion. It starts off familiar just to throw you off course for what’s to come. There’s a good chance that the kids might be excited in story because Haruku is a local legend from the events of the original series. I’m really interested to see where it goes. I’m particularly interested to see what kind of history the two aliens have. I also have a but of a theory to share, I think the ‘headphones’ are a device to control her N/O field. I’m also secretly hoping that they do some sort of commentary about social media creating emotional disconnects and causing an increase in N/O.

We can all agree that FLCL in general has a lot of overtly sexual references and feelings. It makes sense that Freudian logic would have a home in the series.
The ending credits seem to show that when Haruko got Atomsk’s power it split her into two people; Raharu and Jinyu. Id, and Super-Ego.
The Haruko that we see is ‘Raharu,’ I’m guessing it’s the part of Haruko’s personality that is all about anarchy and ‘giving it to the man.’ She’s the ‘Id.’ Impulsive, sexual, human’s basic and instinctual drives. I mean, really, what words describe Haruko better than that? She’s always been off the wall and raunchy.
Jinyu seems to be the part of Haruko’s personality that developed throughout FLCL and cared about Naota, a more righteous and lawful good kinda side. Jinyu is the ‘Super-Ego.’ It aims for perfection, it tries to act in a socially appropriate manner. It controls our sense of right and wrong. It’s a direct opposition to the Id.
So, who is ‘Ego’? Well, at this point it might be Hidomi AND Ide. Ide shows signs of being the Ego in the very first scene with him and his buddies, bragging about his "relation" with Raharu (The Teacher.) Ego has some defense mechanisms that he shows: Fantasy, projection, rationalization, reaction formation.
Hidomi shows signs of being the Ego also: intellectualisation, dissociation. I’m almost positive she will show signs of Identification and Idealization. (As did Naota, btw..)
Interestingly and possibly non-intentional, Ide shows more of the ‘Ego’ as defined by Sigmund Freud himself, while Hidomi shows more of the ‘Ego’ as defined by his daughter, Anna Freud. A male and female take on what the Ego is, maybe?
Sigmund Freud said something that I feel will sum up what Progressive is going to be all about: "Thus the ego[Hidomi/Ide], driven by the id[Raharu], confined by the super-ego[Jinyu], repulsed by reality, struggles in bringing about harmony among the forces and influences working in and upon it," and readily "breaks out in anxiety—realistic anxiety regarding the external world, moral anxiety regarding the super-ego, and neurotic anxiety regarding the strength of the passions in the id."

I felt like the FLCL Progressive protagonist was different enough from the original and there will presumably be two guitars wielding aliens fighting over her that it didn’t feel too similar to the original

As much as I agree with judging the material for wat it is, if it linked to the original source material such as a sequel should be, It will always be compared to the original. And in term of this sequel specifically I wish it’s was just a new series all together cuz despite some similar themes and characters it doesn’t hold the same rebellious spark the original did. Wat stick out to me personally is the lack of cartoony off-model characters builds and psychological imagery used to enhance the originals narrative.

Ok. I’m going to guess that MC-Headphones is Trans. This is kind of slip shod but hear me out. She’s veeery upset with her body, and in the intro literally replaces it with the robot to fight against whateverthenamegroup who are represented by a thing that is associated with housewifes and conformity.
Unisex skirt scene is small but it seems like it could be a set up in some odd way. Then what’s hisfaceMC got a very vaginal looking robot pulled from his head instead of the more masculine bot MC-headphones got.
That and she literally has cat-ear headphones both tie to cat-girls and how she’s isolating herself and rotting away plus the scene in the junk yard where she’s staring at that shattered mirror.
I KNOW this doesn’t make too much sense but something clicked for me and I think it would be really cool and if it doesn’t and or this was all unintentional then it was still solid.

3:58 This is false. Little Busters does not play until the last minutes of Fooly Cooly episode 1, when Canti becomes their servant. The song that plays in Canti’s first fight is Sleepy Head.

This just doesn’t feel like FLCL. It lacks the surreal nature of the original, it takes itself way to seriously, and the main character doesn’t seem to have any personality whatsoever.

The school where the main protagonist goes to is not a normal Japanese Public Junior High School. Its dress code is less restrictive, The girls are basically required to wear a blouse and a skirt or a dress. The boys are still required to wear pants. Yet, one of the male students is seen wearing a skirt. The junior high school is likely an experiment school.
