Camp #1 – BEST THANG EVAR
Camp #2 – DONKEY D**K
Camp #3 – It’s ok. It’s just… ok
Which camp are you guys in?
I’m in Camp #3. I mean, yeah it’s not the best, but animation is nice, voice acting is ok, and the action scenes are pretty good. It just fails where it needs to succeed: characters are bland, hollow and uninteresting, and the plot, despite having an incredibly interesting and intriguing premise, quickly spiralled downhill

I do love this show. I would never ever call it a good show. it is awful, in plot and execution, the actual game physics would suck and it is just plain crap. but I have a sentimental attachment to it, so I like it, despite it being absolute garbage.

I loved the concept and some of the episodes, like murder in the safe zone or whatever, but lots of potential missed and wasted with useless characters.

I agree with most of what you said. Personally, I like the main characters fine, but it was a little unsettling that Asuma to be rescued during the second half after seeing her be this awesome fighter in the first half. The first half it’s where I found myself more enjoying the show an awful lot, but once it got to the second half it went downhill. Dearh in the game had little effect, the world is less interesting, Asuma had to be rescued like I said and so much uncomfortable sensual content, it was a major downplay for sure. Second half is only good for the finale where at least we do get a satisfying ending with everyone living happily ever after. Honestly, if the entire show was set in the original game like I thought it was, this could have been so much more, but as it is, it’s okay. It’s just a shame that the second half damaged it so much because I was starting to consider viewing this as one of my favorite shows of all time. I’m glad I saw it, but I intend to remember it only for most of the first half from the action to then animation, to the intro song to even the romance between the two lead characters.

I don’t even have the incentive to get into this show. Every time I get a bit of it (go to a friend’s and their watching it, someone sends me a clip) it just seems cringeworthy and annoying.

Okay so the soundtracks are nice and the animation is pretty decent and the fight scenes and concept are cool but for me these all together can’t pick up the show beyond 3/10 lol I’m sorry if fans will find me rude but the amount of harem and fan service was absurd and the storyline and dialog only made me question the age of the author because even though I know they are an adult with respective careers I still can’t help but find their mentality to be of a 10 years old in regards to SAO creation, I personally couldn’t finish the show because of the silly time jumps and fillers and heavy fan servicing in the show and the main character kid who was cocky and annoying as fuck :/

The worst part about SAO having a shit ton of flaws is that a lot of them are easily fixable in a second draft with some research. You might not notice if you’re not an avid gamer, but SAO as a game has lots of technical problems that are easy to fix if you know the genre, are familiar with game development, or understand how the game functions. I mean how do you have an RPG without magic, ranged weapons, or job classes??? First of all it’s a horrible design for an RPG. Secondly, having job classes could actually justify specific characters having specific skills no one else has, like Kirito being the only player with dual-wielding. Why is it an MMO if they’re meant to eventually beat it? MMOs aren’t meant to be beat, hence why they’re usually endless. This isn’t even all that’s wrong with it, just some of the most obvious.

Im honestly really on the fence about SAO. There were alot of parts that really caught me and made me wanna like it, but generic harem moments and cardboard cutout charachters really turned me off of it.

Honestly I’m kind of in the “mysterious fourth camp”
Yes the show is trashy and it story and characters are crappy, but we like the music and we like the action scenes (they are pretty) and there is a lot of good fanfiction for this show
so let us sit back and watch a trashy action romp (and then go write really good fanfiction)
That’s my opinion and I’m sticking to it

You should review SAO Abridged right now.
BTW: It takes 3 episodes to get good, 5 episodes to lean towards perfection and 11 episodes to become genuinely emotionally impactful.

When I first decided to explore the franchise of SAO, I found the concept very interesting, and I wanted to see this idea of people being trapped in a video game being explored in the anime (it’s the first anime I came across that dwells on this subject in my experience). however, when I red about what happened in episode 24 of season 1, I was really disgusted with the route the show took, and that was before I saw even one full episode. I enjoyed the parody version of the series a lot, but I couldn’t bring myself to fully enjoy the show itself, when I started actually watching it, because I dreaded of what will eventually happen to Asuna. that, and the combination of the parody being a lot more entertaining than the actual show, combined with the massive amounts of very negative reviews of the second season and movie, made me abandon the franchise. was this a bad decision to check out from the start what will happen in the show in it’s later stages? yes, but even if I hadn’t done that, the Alfheim story arc would’ve nonetheless left me with a very bad taste about the show and what became of it, and season 2 wouldn’t have helped. However, I am also very sad to leave the franchise, because it had SO MUCH good potential and ideas, but they were executed so poorly that it hurts. Many good elements in the show, like the flashy animation, the amazing music, and the love story that was built in season 1’s first half were sadly not enough to keep me going when the Alfheim story began, and the show changed into this really uncomfortable and downright abhorrent bad-fanfic-kind of a story. And in season 2, many of the characters become boring, Kirito is presented as some kind of a god among mortals, and any character development for him is halted to give Sinon her own development, which also ends up being boring, and all of that just takes away from me every desire to even see the movie to it’s fullest. the fight scenes in it are good, but it’s not enough. I really wanted to love SAO, and I honestly DO love a lot of it’s elements, but it’s just not enough for me to love it as a whole, because for me, it feels like a huge let down, as a result of it’s potential being wasted.

I don’t like SAO but I don’t hate it. It got shit after they *spoiler* left sword art online. The show simply wasn’t as good and it felt like a job for me to finish watching it. Which is a shame since I quite liked the first arc.

September 18, 2018 @ 8:26 pm
I got the feeling that the creator trapped everyone in SAO because he was insane. At the end he as that whole monologue about how he always dreamed of his "castle in the sky" and how he wanted to find it, which sort of made me go. "Well this guy is absolutely insane." He did also say that thing at the beginning about wanting to control the youth or something, I don’t know take your pick.
