It’s the Hero Society that creates Villains and it’s Heroes’ job to "eradicate" Villains, endless loop… Ironic, isn’t it…

But, that’s how the reality works just like how shadow born from light…

Honestly this chapter killed my sympathy for him. He could have worked harder at school. Even when he was kicked out he could have joined a different School or done something with his life. His goal was to be a hero but after disappointment his goal became getting noticed. He is like the kid calling a bomb threat to get attention. Now he is willing to attack a school. He lost his way. Now he is even willing to fight a child for the sake of his dream. No it’s not ok. Before I might have sympathy for him but now? What he has become is not who he set out to be. He could be better. And now he is leading a child down a criminal path.

Gentle is a good example of what Izuku might have become if he never met All might.

I think that once Deku becomes an official hero. He will enlist Gentle as a sidekick. He would be incredible useful as both support and suppression and mobility and protection

Gentle is right though. Izuku wants to be the number one hero, that means he must destroy the dream of everyone else who wants to become number one… that, is the way of life.

Gentle is so freaking refreshing. Every damm anime in the world tells you that if you work hard enough you will achieve your dreams. Gentle shows us that’s not the true. Sometimes you are destined to get beaten up by life and forced to forget your ideals. That said, looking for other paths is always possible and even if it’s not your ideal path, something great can still be achieved. Though right now it seems Gentle is doing things the wrong way. Trying to rush his own path to success for the sake of fame, inconveniencing good people in the process.

Correct me if I’m wrong, but I believe that you have a very wrong understanding on what it means when a "line" between two things are said to be "blurred." It means the two things can become indistinguishable from another at times or through some perspective. An example of this is the classic Robin Hood. His actions blur the line of a simple thief and vigilantism. At the end of the day, he’s a thief despite the intentions. He’s as much of a criminal as those that preyed on those that are defenseless on the outskirts of the town. Not the perfect example, but I hope that did explain the difference.

TL;DR: The *line* separates the two concepts, not connect them.

Watched the video by Tripl-L and I have to agree with his opinion. Gentle could have gone the route of a vigilante if his true motivation was helping people (which we’ve seen as a just, though illegal, route one can take through the Vigilantes spin off). But his motivation his true goal is to be remembered, not to help people. While this goal is understandable, and Gentle is certainly not a bad person like Stain, Overhaul, or Shigurkai, it doesn’t justify his actions, regardless of how sympathetic his backstory is.

Labrava was depressed, he had his whole world shattered and destroyed. There’s kinda no way to compare the 2, his situation was arguably way worse due to being genuinely hated and eventually forgotten

I’d like to point out something. While this chapter has portrayed Gentle’s character sympathetically, by no means is he someone we should root for.

There are many themes displayed through the stories and actions of these characters, but once again, we come back to the Hero’s dilemma brought forth by Stain: Gentle’s motivations towards becoming a hero weren’t ideal, but selfish. He wanted fame and recognition foremost. Izuku’s ideals would have clashed with him regardless of his upbringing.

Secondly, yes, while it’s a sad story to hear, it was Gentle’s own actions that put him in such depressing position in the end. He failed the exam four times on his own accord, and he incompetently tried to save someone’s life when it is clear he was neither experienced nor professionally knowledgeable to deal with such situations. As expected, it all turned for worse.

Additionally, I’d like to mention that there are legitimate stakes in this fight. U.A. is hanging precariously on a fine line. As the beacon of heroism, justice, and order it represents, its political/public position is currently at risk. If Gengle successfully crashes the festival after so many incidents–USJ, the events transpired at the forest training camp–Nedzu’s head as director will be called into question as the minimum, not taking into account all the teachers. Let’s remember the fact that the public authorities didn’t even want the festival to be made, and yet still, the School ignored the risks and went with it.

After All Might’s retirement, this would ultimately crush one of the few symbols of justice left for society to follow in a turmoil of political drama and public acceptance. It would only help the uprising of villains.

Gentle’s actions are doing more harm than good in the grand scheme of things.

If Deku had not found All Might he maybe would have ended as Gentle or worse. It is not difficult to sympathize with Gentle despite being technically the villain he is the underdog someone you can understand and identify.

This mangaka is seriously so good , he has one word , the word "hero" and he uses it in different ways
    – saving people (all might , deku)
    – justice (overhaul since he wants to create a world where everyone is equal with no super powers)
    – selflessness (stain)
    – to be remembered in history (gentle)

When you think about, Deku himself was worried about his newly obtained quirk at the time for he now had an ability that could easily hurt or kill someone. Remember the time when Bakugo and Deku were fighting in the villians vs heroes exercise, where Deku managed to punch a hole so far up that it reached the ceiling? If Deku ever had Bakugo’s personality and attacked straight on carelessly, somebody would be dead or heavily injured at some point.

I really love how horikoshi keeps showing how even people with the same starts can get ruined by small things affecting their lives. First with shigiraki who was a relatively normal child who had a rough upbringing and began to hate hero’s because no of them came for him. Then stain who was in the hero course and through his interactions with his peers began to see how ugly their motivations for being hero’s are. And then gentle who because of one mess up and the need and want to be recognized basically ruined him, he wanted to be a hero and a small wall put in his way completely destroyed his dreams and ambitions. All this compared to Izumi who has the same dreams as most of them but everything has gone right for him to be put in the situation he is in. Increasingly incredible writing.

Gentle’s biggest problem isn’t that he wanted to be a hero to help others, like Deku, it’s that he wanted to be a hero for the fame. So that the world would know of him for ages…

    That obviously didn’t happen…

So if he can’t be famous as a hero, he decides to be infamous as a villain.

And that’s the big difference between Gentle and Deku: Deku never thinks of himself when he acts as a hero— his concern is that the festival will be ruined and all of the hard work that his classmates have done will have gone to waste, and that poor Eri will be sad with disappointment. Gentle is only thinking about making a major scene at the festival so he can publicize his actions on social media for the world to notice him. Polar opposites…

"You don’t need a license to be a good hero", just doesn’t sound like a good lesson to learn. We’ve already established that having no license can result in some pretty bad stuff, from the stain arc and in this chapter (granted I haven’t read the Vigilantes spin-off but I remember it taking place 5-6 years before the main story).

I really do love this chapter and I really love Gentle’s character because he’s relatable and I don’t mean his dream of being famous. The relatable thing for me is the fact the he forgot his dream and when reality finally hit him in the face on how he forgot his dream. It’s only when this happened that he made a mad dash towards his dream and started to make the extra effort to achieve it (Like that part where he goes back to his apartment and grabs, what I think is, a textbook).

However looking at his past and his present I can’t help but feel that, aside from his revived motivation, nothing else has changed. Gentle is acting with the best of intentions but doesn’t see the consequences of those actions. He didn’t consider the possibility of him interfering in the past and he doesn’t consider how much of a negative impact his infiltration will have on UA.

I don’t want anything bad to happen with Gentle and La Brava and this arc really shows potential for them. I really hope the two becomes a vigilante or he finds the motivation to try for a hero license again (they hinted at having some changes in the current exam, so gentle may have a chance now). Either way, I hope this is not the last time we see them.

See, a good manga has a good, well-developed main character.
A great manga has a whole cast of well-developed main characters.

Horikoshi went *F&CK IT* and developed _all_ his characters for the sake of building his world, and I don’t even know what to call that. Even for characters that don’t get a lot of screen time, like Class B, you can tell that they all have their own depths we simply don’t have time to see.
Appropriately, they’re all "heroes of their own story", to the point where you could probably tell a spin-off story with any single one of them, even if some are more interesting than others.

I don’t like the fact the only form of character development that BNHA has is voiceover flashbacks, except for very rare cases, like Ururaka. I’m just a bit tired of flashbacks since the Overhaul arc.

These past few chapters are giving me the same vibes for the recent arcs in Beastars.
Not hero based of course but it involves the way society treats a certain subset of people and instantly demonizes them with no hope for redemption.

I recommend anyone read Beastars if they haven’t already.

Villains are the gifted misfortunes that are not saved by heroes in times of need. Izuku was saved by a hero named All Might, but gentle doesn’t have a saviour. It’s really the summary of the whole idea. Heroes cannot save everyone, that’s why there will always be villains in a hero story.

Villains are people that fail in a story, whether they are on the opposing side of the one writing it or are judged by someone for the way they look or act marking them as an obstacle in the writers way, whether its their home life or a failed selfless act that people blame them for. Some times its just them having a problem that they can’t control, a problem that makes them who they are, or a misunderstanding that makes them out to be in the wrong, there is nothing that makes Law and Justice the same. Only people getting what is coming to them is Justice, even if it means everything they deserve comes after death.

Deku is a genius, Gentle, not so much.
Gentle’s backstory made me thinking that he’s someone who wants to be on the top, but doesn’t want to get his hands dirty. No, he’s not a coward or weak. What I meant is, will he put his life on the line for a total stranger if situation calls for it?
Deku will, and the majority of class 1-A and B will, as well as the U.A teachers, that’s what makes them heroes.
Not to mention, people who have their names on the history books, whether it be heroes, geniuses, or celebrities, the majority of them don’t have long lives.

Yes, it’s a harsh world we live in, and some people do work their hardest but get the worst luck.
But if we’re talking about hero work, it’s a dangerous profession. If you’re a hero, the next day could be your last day of living, so if you’re not cut out for it, sometimes giving up is the best option.
