Kitaro’s dad is just an eyeball because he died before Kitaro was born, and had only enough energy to resurrect that tiny piece of himself!
For a brief second in the new intro sequence, you can see the eyeball falling past the face of a corpse, which is taken from the origin scenes in the manga. As you can probably guess, older Kitaro manga and anime was even darker and more grim.
A short series, Hakaba Kitaro, came out a few years back based more directly on the darker stories…where Kitaro was almost villainous!
