And at least with the Fannings they were actual children. The streamline actresses were grown women.

Basically whichever version you grew up with, that’s the one you love. Me, for example, can only watch the streamlined version of Totoro (NOT the Disney one) but for Kiki’s Delivery Service I grew up watching the Disney dubbed one.

I’d say both dubs are on par, having seen both in their entirety. Acting wise, the Fannings and the adults do very well (especially Elle’s Mei), and the script is a bit better on the Disney dub. The only area that I feel the Disney dub falters is in the OP/ED songs, which sound a little too "gungho" compared to the more milder FOX versions, but otherwise, both are excellent dubs.

Spirited Away is probably Hayao Miyazaki’s best work now but at the time this was. It is also his first movie to get media attention.

I wish I could have heard the 90s dub. I heard that it’s way better than the other dub. The only way to watch it is to find the VHS copy. Speaking of Streamline, there was also an original english dub for Kiki’s Delivery Service. Sadly, it was never released on VHS like My Neighbor Totoro. I have heard a rumor though that the original Kiki’s Delivery Service dub is on a laserdisc (I doubt it’s even true). Would be cool to also hear the original english dub for Kiki’s Delivery Service.

I don’t know, I thought the original one was a bit weak, like the Castle in the Sky one back in the 80s. But I definitely agree with you about the new songs in Disney’s dub. They felt less sophisticated.

You know, the 1993 theatrical run of My Neighbor Totoro happened to be on May 7th, 1993. 50th Street Troma Films should have given it a domestic theatrical release that year.

People being critical… The disney version hired real children. They cannot change their voices, it was as is. Both versions are great.

I saw Streamline’s version first, thought that was pretty good.

When Disney’s version came about, which I own now, I was surprised to hear different voices for the characters. Oh well, I still enjoyed the movie no matter which dub it used.

What’s wrong with the Fannings? They were just as cute and are very talented too.

This was the first Hayao Miyazaki film that I’ve ever seen in theatres when I was 8. Since then, it became my favorite, along with many others. I wish Disney had kept the original English dub with Cheryl Chase (Angelica from "Rugrats".)

The new Disney dub is better. Luckily I saw this for the first time a year ago so I’m not blinded by nostalgia.
