I remember the scene where her parents turned into pigs traumatized me as a kid. I had forgotten everything about this movie except that scene. But now that I’m grown it is my favorite Ghibli movie. Haku is adorable

When I saw Haku for the first time I honestly thought it was girl. But then he started talking and I was like oh it’s a boy

I watched this movie as a child way before I even knew what "anime" was. The art and storytelling just kept me glued to my TV. Beautiful stuff.

    Nice reaction! 👍
    From Japan.
I recommend Studio Ghibli’s "Castle in the Sky" and "Nausicaä of the Valley of the Wind " to you.
Both are works over 30 years ago.

I lived in Japan and this movie is one of a handful that just brings me back to Japan and makes me feel good. Miyazaki made this movie specifically for a Japanese audience. But it speaks to me as well at times. If nothing else it is a classic coming of age story (like many of his movies) with a particular Japanese message to it.

Whisper of the Heart is the other Studio Ghibli movie that brings me completely back to Japan, though in a more day to day nostalgia way. This is different.

Keep watching Studio Ghibli. If you did Grave of the Fireflies, you can do ANY of them.

In some ways there are four that go together. Totoro first, which introduces you to the Japan Miyazaki remembered as a child from a child’s point of view. Followed by Pom Poko which is a mythological take on the overdevelopment Miyazaki’s childhood Japan into the suburbs of Tokyo. That is followed by Whisper of the Heart which takes place in a similar neighborhood that Totoro showed before and Pom Poko shows during development. Then the imagination of the main character in Whisper of the Heart leads to The Cat Returns, which is based on the story she writes in Whisper of the Heart. The four movies are all different, some done by different directors, but all are linked. Totoro is charming. Pom Poko environmental and a bit weird. Whisper of the Heart is a great coming of age story and adolescent romance in an overdeveloped part of the Tokyo Suburbs and the desire of kids to escape from those suburbs. And The Cat Returns is pure fantasy based on the imagination from the very realistic Whisper of the Heart.

I have never known a more irresponsible bunch of parents in my entire life, the father was so curious he would lead his entire family to death to satisfy that curiosity all in the name of "fun", this is how people die!!!

    I will explain it easily.
It is thought that there are multiple worlds in Japan, such as the world where people live, the world where God lives, and the world of the dead.
Chihiro and her parents happen to get lost in a different world that is connected to the human world.

In this world, there is a huge bathhouse that heals the exhausted gods and spirits in the human world.

The employees working in this huge bathhouse are originally beasts, reptiles and insect spirits.
The working spirits have transformed into human figures because they are more convenient when working.
