This is probably my favorite movie period. Not just anime. The artwork and vista in the background are impeccable, and the music score is sublime. Monoke Hime Theme is among my favorite orchestrations. The crystal dagger was given to him by his sister, not a love interest. I got the sense you thought that when you got weirded out about him giving the dagger to San. I see another comment already covered the massive symbolism in this masterpiece. There is so much philosophy here and its just good to see people reacting to it online. I have probably watched this film 100 times and it never doesn’t make me cry. Ya the end originally frustrated me too, but the more I watch it i get the message of the artists and director come through. Thanks for this once again 🙂 .

The thing about Lady Eboshi is that she was not a total villain. From the point of view of the forest, she certainly was, but from the point of view of the people, she was a hero. She took in and protected the helpless and friendless, and gave them work and a place to live and kept them safe from the marauding samurai like the ones Ashitaka saw raiding that village after he left his homeland. Her mistake was to fixate on the needs of the people and her own ambitions. She saw the resistance of the forest as merely another enemy to be conquered, and her arrogance and ambition are what let her be drawn into Jigo’s plan to kill the deer god. I think that it shows she has learned some humility at the end, and will most likely proceed in the future with a little more care for the forest around her. Her survival is probably the best outcome, because if she died, the people would have no strong leader and would likely be taken over by some local warlord, who had not learned any of the lessons she’s just been taught, and everything would start over again…without any of the powerful forest gods left to oppose the new threat. The subtitle versions you used were the direct translation. I personally feel that the subtitles based on the English dub make a lot of things more clear and understandable. I know a lot of anime purists hate dubs, but for this movie, in my opinion, the dub made better sense.

When I get my debts paid off, the first thing I’m getting is a Kodama shirt 😀

    森の中にいた妖精みたいなコダマは、後々に進化してトトロになった。という裏設定があるよ。トトロは昔の日本の田舎の風景でほのぼのします。

Amazing fact it will blow you mind the girl named kaya at the start of the movie is actually ashikata fiance who gave him the locket. Also it is completely confirmed that she was pregnant with his kid. And his descendent from her passed down his legend. The movie name was first supposed to be legend of ashikata. That is why he has more screen time then monoke. You can even check the wiki fandom of girl name kaya it is real. The japanese women hated his character for him being a cheater. He was shown as brother to her for the western audience. Go check the fandom page of girl named kaya.

So I loved this movie so much, beautiful storyline, but I think that as a main character and a person whose name is the title of the movie, Mononoke didn’t do much and we only got to see her several minutes into the movie.
Also, I was really pissed towards the end because WHY WAS EBOSHI STILL ALIVE?? I get that she was arguably a good person and helped women and made life better for some people but I feel like she should have died, Jigo as well.
Then Ashitaka’s character was amazing and annoying at the same time. I get the whole "both sides should live in harmony" thing but dude!!! He lost the girl and isn’t going back to his village and after saving Eboshi, she’s gonna rebuild ironworks again and she’ll need iron so she’ll cut down more trees. No lesson has been learnt here!

All I really cared about was Yaku the elk, I’m so glad he didn’t die😊❤

Just my opinion though, what do you guys think?
