I actually liked it, specially because I knew the anime. Some of the characters relationships were good imo and the twists with the characters left me with an actual shock as it wasn’t what I was expecting. If you just are expecting for a live action movie to be the same as the anime then just watch the anime, it’s great as it is.

Most of the people who hate on the movie are just butt hurt weebs who don’t understand what a Western Adaptation is

The anime was terribly written – starts off good and then turns into a meandering, incoherent mess. So yeah, if you like that garbage you aren’t going to like the live action adaptation, which isn’t great, but is better than the anime.

Ryuk was pretty well imagined……MF looked pretty unsettling to be fair lol the rest of the film was lacklustre at best. The cast was underwhelming with bad role-choices all around. If anything it makes me want to watch the Anime again. IMO it’s a solid 4.5 out of 10.

I think the movie was a decent crime movie for a general audience who has not seen the anime.

Death Note is my favorite anime and by far my favorite series I’ve ever watched. With that said i actually really enjoyed this movie. There were many things that were off-putting and weird , mostly the 80 soundtrack and breaking out of characters but… It was a GOOD movie. The acting wasn’t bad, in fact actors were great, the thing you might not like is how their roles are portrayed within the script itself. I loved the little twists that they added that were exclusive to the movie and the open type of ending. The cons are mainly focused on the fact that intelligence isn’t the key factor of this movie.
    I give it 6.5-7/10 .

I don’t think the goal for the movie was meant for us who knew the manga and anime. I honestly feel that it was geared towards to those who would otherwise never bother giving Deathnote a chance simply because it’s an anime.

I came into the movie with the mind of "I don’t know what these Japanese animu and mangos are". If you can keep that in mind, it wasn’t a bad movie. If you can’t you’re not going to enjoy it.

Will say that the gore scenes were pretty good.

I’m a fan of the original manga but I still really liked this movie. It was just a fun film. Adam Wingard himself said, before the release, that he was adapting & stylising it for American audiences. There’s already a live action Japanese Death Note show from 2006, along with the anime, so I was glad Wingard created his own individual interpretation ( ^ω^ ).

Everyone who is saying that it was good to see new story are dumb. Its nothing bad to make new story but was it necessary to ruin original characters. They could just have copied the idea of book but what they did.Copied every character even the book name and ruined everything

This is a bad movie regardless of whether or not it’s an adaptation. Just watch the anime while eating potato chips. It’s much more rewarding.

This is probably the best review I’ve heard for the movie. Most of them are just fanboy rants about all the inaccuracy. This is an AMERICANIZED reboot of Death Note. What were you expecting? This was never meant to be a retelling or translation of the original story. Rather, it was supposed to be a new take on the concept. Is the Anime WAY better than the movie? Yes. Is the Anime’s legacy ruined by this movie? No. Not at all, and I think some fanboys are taking this movie way too personally. I loved the Death Note show, and I thought this movie was fine for a different take on the material. If you want an accurate live action movie, watch the Japanese films. I’m glad this wasn’t just the exact same thing. It wasn’t as good as it could have been, but I’d still say its a solid 6 or so. Not worth the rediculous amount of hate its been getting.

I know they took some elements of the anime into the movie and actually tried to make alot of rules like the first version DEATH NOTE..

THIS IS LOOSELY BASE ON DEATH NOTE..sure sure..looks very promising.

I’m pretty sure someone like that should NOT BE NAMED LIGHT—he’s more of a JEFF or a DRAKE-type of guy…

I was hoping that the guy became increasingly smart as the movie progressed until he peaked as KIRA and him and L would have this intellectual standoff..

instead, what we got was something TWILIGHT SCREEN WRITERS would shat out on a weekend of binging on netflix..

the movie was very promising…WILLIAM DA FOE made it really watchable and it was going good until they forced that shit love story and made LIGHT look like love sick puppy..

and how the fuck did that MIA chick SUCKER-TASER A FUCKING FBI AGENT…?

there are more questions than answer.

i wanna give it a solid 5/10 because it had promised

but the overall story made it shit and unwatchable….

2/10. still better than twilight and much much better than DB evolution.

I don’t think the movie is bad as everybody says it is. But it’s not as good as the live-action Japanese Death Note movies. What I’m trying to say is the movie was good but could have been better.

If this was a live action show instead of a movie I think it would have been way better, they skipped a lot and the movie just felt choppy considering how much they were trying to fit into a movie

I haven’t watched it yet because i was just disappointed that America wanted to westernize a show that has its cultural identity i.e., Japanese. it bastardize the ideas of the show and its whole premise. I knew that this going to be just as bad as the Dragon Ball Z film. Some anime shows are better off left the way they were created.

worst netfix movie I have ever seen, it’s like they thought the unrealistic gore would carry the movie, plus william defoe helped but that’s the only highlight of this disaster of a movie

From a fan of death note- 5/10 is way too generous
    I would rate 1 or 2/10
To me they ruined the premise of death note from the first kill and knew immediately that L would b the one to catch him. And mellow and neer would be nowhere to be found.
I found light flaily and uncalculating and finding that Mia had more light moments then light did

Im not even going to compare it with the anime or manga or even the Japanese Film. Because if I compare the three, it really going to end with the movie was a completely fucking disaster. But I will say for an American version of its own, it would be okay. How ever just some flaws Im not even going to name all the flaws just some that really triggered me. The whole final destination deaths twist kindof taken away the original element of the heart attacks, as well as if anybody touch any part of the Death Note was Supposed to see Ryuk but they took that out which was uncool. What I really hated about this movie is how they portrayed L. I didnt mind the actor, but he should had atleast watched L’s character. However I will atleast say Willam Dafoe did a great job with Ryuk. I kindof feel as though he kindof was the one holding the movie. Light is really was supposed to be ruthless, they made him to soft in this movie.

why Light didn’t ask Watari to kill L? How did Light knew Watari’s real name in the first place? How did Miya tased a well trained FBI field agent? Why is this movie so stupid.

I liked it for what it was. The deaths were rather gruesome and I liked that we got to see them.

It was never going to stick to the anime as much, so I’d say go into it with an open mind.

Having not seen the original Death Note series. I will say this movie has moments where its hard to follow and moments where it shines. William Dafoe is a Standout and honestly saves the movie. Everything else just seems kinda jumbled and confusing. Well to me atleast.
