L and Riyuk are my favorite characters easily. I adore the moral grey ground this manga plays in. I am not looking forward to the Netflix adaptation coming out soon.

Great review!! I think you should give A Silent Voice a try. It’s an incredibly beautiful story.

Hi there! Love your channel. I recently found you while looking for adult fantasy recs. ^^ I don’t think I was ever so invested in an anime/manga before Death Note. I kept trying to figure out who would finally outsmart the other. I agree that it got slower at the end, and the females in it were not the smartest. My favorite character is Ryuk!

You should try Full Metal Alchemist or Neon Genesis Evangelion. FMA centers around two alchemist brothers, but the female characters are pretty strong. The anime is REALLY good, too. NGE has strong male and female main characters, but instead of magic, people captain giant robots. The NGE anime is considered a classic.

Great review Connor. Death Note is one of the first manga I read and it still holds a place in my top 5. I’d encourage you to keep watching the anime – the music adds to the punch. (plus the theme songs are badass).

Light and L are two sides of the same coin. One memorable moment is when L washes/cleans Light’s feet – it’s a very Judas/Jesus moment.

True, Misa isn’t the sharpest female character, but you also have Naomi Misora, the female detective who is suspicious and cautious towards Light. Naomi is also the main character in Death Note: Another Note, which is a prequel novella to the events that take place before Death Note.

And Rem, the female shinigami. 😉 I’m delighted that there are female death gods.

I have a Death Note notebook for safe keeping. The pages are still blank though 😀

I haven’t finished the manga yet but I watched the anime a couple of years ago and I think Death Note is exactly what got me into anime. Unfortunately I am not really into rereading or rewatching something I’ve already read or watched so my opinion of the show back then might be different from what I would think if I watched it now but it feels very nostalgic and it left quite the impression on me. I really enjoyed your review and I also just watched your My Grandma Says To Tell You She’s Sorry one (a book I just recently binge read and absolutely loved). Definitely subscribing!

Also, I want to ask you to read and make a review of this book called Wildalone. It’s quite special to me as both the author of the book and I myself are Bulgarian so I really appreciate some cultural parts of the book (you’ll see for yourself if you read it). I almost don’t see any reviews of the book so I’d be happy to hear someone else’s opinion, someone who hasn’t grown up with those stories and tails, on the story, the atmosphere and especially on the Bulgarian culture, myths and legends. Thank you in advance!

You have this wonderful tendency to review books right before I am about to pick them up! I just checked out the first few volumes from my library to try it. This will be my first ever manga (I’ve watched quite a bit of anime but could never fathom the idea of reading backwards) and I have heard that this one is a good one to start with.

Yup, agree wholeheartedly with you Conor!! Death Note was my first introduction to Anime/Manga. I watched the anime first many many years ago but it’s a series that I always recommend to people as a jumping off point for manga/anime. The latter half really does let the series down but it had such a good start that you HAVE to keep going to see what the ultimate outcome is!! Ryuk by far is the best character in the series XD <3 apples
