Wow, this is really good! Fortunately for me, I never cared about the KH story; I already knew Square Enix stories are stupid. The characters and the gameplay are what made it great (it surprises me that an FPS player could care less about story though; hmm). Really though, CoM actually had a pretty ok story.

Tim, you got that thing about Lea and Isa completely wrong. They’re weren’t even aware of Kairi’s existence at all. Those two were trying to look for this girl called Subject X that they’ve became friends with. It’s because of her were Axel and Saix in the Organization to begin with. Subject X was said to be 15 years old in one of the Secret Reports you can get in KH3’s postgame.

Kairi has nothing to do with Lea and Isa’s past.

This type of videos have gotten stale long ago, honestly. KH isn’t that complex if you been following the game, it just spans through many entries and consoles. You don’t like the series, fine, but it’s really annoying when people complain about it. Maybe read more complex literature and watch more complex movies to understand construction of narratives and plot points? Yea there some issues plot wise but that’s expected with anything that spans a continuity of 15 games over the course of 20 years. But kudos to all the work you put into making this.

YouTubers all have the same reaction to Kingdom Hearts and attempt to sound intelligent, pointing out all the “inconsistencies” instead of just playing the games maybe they’d figure out that there’s not actually a lot at all.

Excellently made video, but the moment I saw the crazy notes I knew I would be disagreeing by the end. While there is a ludicrously complicated plot to follow in KH if you want to follow it, the storytelling transcends video games and should be understood from an art perspective, focusing more on emotional understanding. For example, we can intuit that Riku’s arc throughout the series is an abstract reflection of a person experiencing depression and learning to love themselves and their own “darkness within.” We all make this sort of understanding when listening to music – the lyrics of a song might not be logically straightforward, but we make our own emotional understanding of what the song means to us. This is how all art works, especially the more abstract it gets, and there’s more than enough layered metaphors, symbolism, and abstract language in kingdom hearts to conclude that Tetsuya Nomura writes the series with artful intent, not necessarily as a puzzle to be solved. He’s just a brilliant enough writer to allow you to look at his work either way and it still works. Anyway, that’s my super long YouTube comment 2 cents

Amazing! After being on a KH youtube spree recently, I was suggested a 1hlong video by a creator with 600ish subscribers and was keen on seeing what it would be.
Within the first minute I was hooked by the production value, great script and pace. The video gave me this warm fuzzy feeling that Kingdom Hearts always have done.
And then it comes, 17:15 into the video, the speech that just drove it all home. My exact experience with the Kingdom Hearts universe at the point of KH3 release. (I knew all about BBS, 358/2, Coded etc but had never given them much thought). Excellent video!

This might be the best Kingdom Hearts video on YouTube. High production quality, top tier clickbait that is admittedly not a lie in the title, and a recap of the franchise’s entire plot with only a couple missed details (Namely, the reveal in Dream Drop Distance that Nobodies actually do grow their hearts back). How somebody can release a video like this with a somewhat active channel and not have even 1000 subs is insane to me.

I actually discovered KH when my grandma and sister found this game at our nearby second-hand store, Kingdom Hearts 358/2 days because they thought "this looked like something you might enjoy". And I did, a lot, I actually really loved and replayed it a thousand time, enough to remember some dialogue, which were in English, when I was a preteen speaking French and not making much efforts in class.
I didn’t have a choice as to the order I played games in but I could play 1, which was fine, but I couldn’t enjoy as much. I tried chain of memory, but I was barely a teen playing stupidly, I got stuck by not choosing HP enough, which meant dying a lot, and I didn’t really get to try to unstuck myself as I couldn’t play on the computer on which I played. I also had to borrow a psp from a friend in order to play BBS which he said was really great and which was my 2nd favourite. I skipped a few games because following spin offs is complicated and I had to buy most games in a second-hand store at the time.
I also played 3D but I got a bit disappointed with it I think, though I really enjoyed raising the dream pets and the game mechanics in the bus.
I think maybe my experience with the games was mostly for the story, and while everything is complicated and weird as described here, instead of feeling confused (I guess I expected it to be at one point and stopped trying to get it) I just felt like KH’s story often is "go around random worlds, it won’t matter until the end because we decided to let ou choose the order of things). 358/2 and BBS felt like they had a little more story compared to the other. KH 3 felt particularly blind, with the game also feeling extra easy on the hardest mode, and just a "let’s quickly wrap things up like it’ll feel deserved" at the end.
I don’t feel like giving this series a try again.
This is a bit long, but at one point I just wanted to share my experience with it. Thank you for sharing yours

Fantastic video! I played Kingdom Hearts 1 and 2 for the first time recently myself. I was very confused by people saying KH1 has a simple story because I really had no idea what was going on most of the time. What even is Kingdom Hearts? Why is Mickey Mouse inside it? Why does Maleficent have so many simultaneous guests on her podcast? Why are they called heartless when they are just hearts with attitude problems?

By comparison I found KH2’s story a lot more comprehensible. I mean, heartless and nobody should totally swap names, but I really liked Roxas’ story and mostly understood what was happening in KH2.

To explain why Roxas and Xion have hearts, well, Xehanort/Xemnas lied right to their fucking faces (which we kinda already knew, since the entire mission statement of Organization XIII was also a big, fat lie). Sure, all Nobodies start out without hearts, but as soon as they start developing their old personalities, emotions, and connections again, a new heart shaped by their memories materializes within them. Remember, in the world of Kingdom Hearts, a person’s "heart" has little to do with pumping blood through their bodies–it’s more analogous to their soul. So, as soon as Roxas, Xion, and all the other Organization members developed a strong sense of self and personality, a new soul was created for each of them.

So, the moment Roxas and Xion went from being shambling husks of themselves to walking, talking human beings with personalities, they obtained hearts.

I just finished the video and I must say…knowing this game series for 4 or maybe even more years, this video helped me out to actually understand it all way better than ever before…i must say i was very lost after kh3 especially with the dlc, even union x confused me so much. The production value was so amazing too!! also i love how often you say ‘dont think about it’ that is the number one sentence for kingdom hearts if i ever heard one.
