I feel like people heard the words "American" and "White Washing" attached to this film, and automatically decided to hate it.
Truth be told, Dragon Ball Evolution – to me – is just disappointing to me, but I don’t hate it…I more or less view it as a losing situation no matter what; you’re damned if you do and damned if you don’t.

I did not even waste my time with this movie. I saw so many reviews, read the story on wikia… and everything else… and I just couldn’t find any interest in the movies ideas.

Sorry but, nah. This movie is trash already without using the main anime. The movie is bad on it’s own. Just look at the cosmonaut variety hour’s review.

The problem is that they turned Light into basically the typical school shooter white boy, which changes his entire character and paints these school shooter kids like this version of Light as moral and in the right even though they’re not

Personally I’m not biased, I can enjoy both as I see them completely seperate from eachother. The American alternate version is great for normies who don’t watch anime. It’s actually how I got some of them into the anime which they found sooo much better.

This movie sucks! It had potential but unfortunately the story was severely dumbed down for American audiences. The Japanese adaptations we’re actually pretty good in my opinion.

While I find the movie to be okay. There are some things I enjoyed and some things I didn’t. While I could harp on this movie vs the source material it is an adaptation & so stuff will change. However when u look at it on it own there are still things I don’t enjoy. Spoiler Warning: For example Light seems to just be a typical angsty teen that we see in countless movies rather than this supported intelligent person that they seem to be alluring to throughout the film. L also seem to be okay until the press conference scene. I can see why he would go after Light for what happened to his father figure even though we don’t really see it in the movie but why would a detective who hides his face and rarely goes out do a press conference. It makes zero sense to me. As for him having a girlfriend and Mia, this also doesn’t really make sense as it seems like they just throw in a girlfriend for him to have. She feels like a throw away character to give him motivation for only part of the movie. Mia on the other hand is very interesting as she seems to believe in what Light does but she is willing to go to a farther than he is in making the world a better place. Otherwise this is a an okay film

Coming from the channel who’s entire review for Kancolle basicly was, ‘it’s just Strike Witches on boats.’
Take what you will from that.
Edit: I do still respect this channel, and am a proud subscriber. I just don’t agree with everything they say.
It’s not that I like or dislike this movie, it’s more that I just don’t have an opinion. I’ve never watch this movie, and therefore CAN’T make a valid opinion.

I get how it is like an alternate story like thing but I don’t really like how they cast people like L was completely different from the anime aside from the love for sugar like L I still think that in alternate story L would still be similar to the one in the anime and Mia the one that replaced Misa with was a little off the wall and crazy and I think that even tho she wasn’t a random person to find the second death note she was still really weird but as much as i didn’t like the movie it still was ok but it wasn’t thought out right and written a little wrong

Honestly I would have found this okay if they could have just picked a lane. Lines like "Kira has returned" indicate we wanted it to be a sequel. Naming the characters the same indicates we wanted to be a remake. If they had picked one or the other I think it could have been decent. Honestly I like the idea of a sequel, Ryuk messing with a new kid in the US sounds like it has potential.

17:00 For some reason I feel no one mentions the tv drama that is available on crunchyroll/vrv. I watched it in preparation for the American movie which didn’t come out at the time. Funny thing, it starts with Light at a Misa Misa concert.

I get what you guys are saying about the movie. Take the plot device from a anime and put it in another part of the world outside of Japan and to be honest I wouldn’t mind if that is what the movie was about. Where the Death Note went after Light’s time with it and who got it next but that didn’t happen. The producers used characters from the source and pretty much butchered the entire story you say that it is a different adaptation of the original story and that it isn’t suppose to be the same but that is what they did.

They took the original story and characters but Americanized it. Like really what American parent would name their kid Light ? American parents name their kids Hashtag or Emoji you know something stupid. But back on point if the movie was about what some people think would happen after the events of the original Death Note that would actually be pretty good idea but again the movie is not that.

Also final note really not helping your case in defending Netflix Death Note when you are saying it is like Dragon Ball Evolution. Dragon Ball Evolution is something not even the entire world supply of brain bleach can get rid of.

this version of light made my cringe, and Imo i think it got all the hate it deserved. People who were new to the series were subjected to it and if they saw the OG death note would be weird out by the changes.

light was always seen as cool and calculating, a genius who was popular and used the death note out of being bored at first, then to insight justice on what he felt was a cruel world that didn’t punish evil. Only to become evil in the end.

With the netflix one all we got was a bullied teen who screams like a girl, and almost justifying killing those who bullied you. Which is a big deal as school shooters are kids who got bullied with no help, and took matters in their own hands. L imo was too hyper and didn’t act like a good rival for light.

The only good part was william defoe as ryuk as he looked like ryuk. Infact even in the anime ryuk does look a bit like defoe.

The only thing I hated about this movie was the bitch girlfriend character! literally the only good thing she does herself is stand up to that bully at the beginning and that’s it! It should of been a best friend character that SLOWLY goes insane with "Doing horrible things for the greater good" like killing detectives maybe saying things like.

Light: You want to start killing innocent people!?

Friend: To save MILLIONS! billions even! If you get arrested Light the criminals win!

This movie is flawed. On one hand, Ryuk was the best part of the movie, they had some interesting ideas. On the other hand, they completely butchered Misa and Light, and they Americanized it beyond belief. I personally don’t think it’s that good

    3:08 Oh Jesus Christ…

Of all the names they could’ve given the first victim, they had to go with KENNY? God, it’s like that name is becoming as much of a magnet for danger as the character himself.

Light Turner’s idiocy is too much for me to enjoy the movie. Seriously I’ll never understand why he kept the death note after seeing something that scares him. Oh right… cause boobs.

  47. Robin Ashenor
    March 18, 2019 @ 1:10 am

I feel you have a large misunderstanding of the criticism.

It’s not “They wouldn’t do this and it’s bad because it’s not like the original.”

It’s bad because they took the characters and made them idiots. Nothing is clever or rational, Light immediately kills a bully in his school, then the person who murdered his mother, drawing attention to himself from the second he uses the notebook. It’s bad because it’s poorly written.

Being a reboot or remake doesn’t absolve it of being worse than the original.
