I wish we can have a live serie which tells the stories from normal people’s perspective. Still following the original timeline, with Light and L showing up now and then in the background, but the main character of each episode would be a prisoner, or a running criminal, or a normal citizen, a victim of violence, a policeman, a media reporter, a politician…they can be Light’s schoolmate or Misa’s fan, and show us how kira has influenced their lives and their various opinions.
In fact there are tons of stuffs unexplored in the original manga, with the emphasis staying with Light and L’s match of wits. By telling stories of the rest of the world, we can have some real philosophical debates. That’s the only way I believe a Death Note adaptation can do, in some way, better than the original piece.

The Guest is a great little movie. That’s about all I have to add. Also the Bleach adaptation on Netflix is really, really well done, with Scott Pilgrim vibes even.

around 1:12:25 you mention how L’s part could have been played by the FBI.
honestly, i was really hoping this would be a spinoff. hell, the death note series’ own cannon creates the perfect opportunity for it in that period where Light wasn’t Kira. a whole bunch of people got their hands on the various notes during that period. follow one of them on a wild ride to america. have Raye Penber’s ex partner head up the investigation.

i thought you were a fan of it, considering you use it’s music sometimes in your videos. the movie does suck, and i haven’t even watched it, nor will i ever. i’m going to just agree that the movie is bullshit, because i honestly heard E V E R Y O N E in the fandom say so, soooo…
i’m just not gonna watch it, for the sake of my love for death note.

Monster is a pretty good anime if you’re one of those "I don’t like anime" types.

So is Full Metal Alchemist and Paranoia Agent. Especially Paranoia Agent.

i think DN is a pretty cool series BUT is not flawless, is full of very convenient plot devices and really stupid dialogue and bad animation, and every fucking second the characters are explaining everything to the audience, like we were retards or something, i just don’t get how Adam loves it so much if he is such an asshole with his nitpick reviews

I’m currently 1 hour into the podcast and needa vent. In the movie they added this rule of "you can’t do anything that’s physically impossible" which is like the only rule they specifically mentioned, and they contradict it! The rule adds none and then they do the ladder thing, and later they make non-Japanese people write in perfect Japanese even though neither Light nor the victims know Japanese, making it impossible for them to have written that shit (also why would someone named Light *Turner*, aka an American want that message to be in Japanese?) The fact that they specified that made up rule just frustrates the hell outta me

I kinda liked it. I mean, it wasn’t great or anything, but there was some interesting shot composition, the acting wasn’t god-awful, and I liked the material. I have no doubt the anime is worlds better, but I had a good time watching the movie.

I certainly wouldn’t call Death Note the "anime for people who don’t like anime", that only evinces a very limited understanding of what anime is. Too many people think of anime as this cutesie, pokemon bs, when it can actually run to very serious, very dark, and very adult, themes. The term "anime" covers so many genres that it’s only vaguely useful as a descriptor.

As for this movie, I forced myself to let go of my preconceptions of what it should have been and tried to recontextualize it in my mind as a sequel, of sorts, to the anime. Instead of this being the characters from the show, this is a new L – one of the students trained for that title – heading to America to deal with a new Kira, who just happened to also have the name Light – perhaps that is why the Ryuk chose him, because he shared the name with the original.

If you come to it from that perspective, it still sucks complete ass but at least it isn’t quite so anger inducing.

As an aside, I always preferred Light over L, though I also always stop watching the anime after L dies because it really jumps the shark after that.

What annoyed me the most about the movie was that none of the apples were fully eaten like in the anime. Don’t ask me why that part specifically?

I’d love to see/listen to more rants/ping-pong conversations on other subjects, because this was super chill and I laughed a lot. It reminded me of the things I *loved* about the Death Note anime and how disappointed I was from the Netflix film (REEEEEEEEyuk got ruined, even if Willem Dafoe did his best)

Death Note will do for dutch angles and slow motion what Jaws did to the ocean.

  27. williem dafoe
    October 18, 2018 @ 11:09 pm

Williem was the best part and he wasnt even used a lot that sucks this movie needed to be a mini series at least 12 ep all 1 hour with more people from the manga/anime

Willem Da’foe was the person doing ryukes face and voice, the other person was in a costume.

Apples are a Movie Device to define whoi an Asshole is, if you look at old Westerns (Black & White Era Especially) they had the Bad Cowboy with a Black Hate, the Good had a White Hat, so you could quickly pick up on who was who visually, and Apples are the dame, so it is just the Shitty fucking Director, taking something cliche and making it ironic or whatever, basically it’s more of the directors douchbaggery. Instert your signature "haha it’s ironic" here. Love your work btw.

I kind of wanted his entire thing to just be Adam’s face being permanently looping while zooming into his face. There would be one where it would zoom into Chase and he would look to the camera and mouth "help me." That would make this way more fun.

Not gonna lie, your rants about movies really relieve some stress for me. I’ll definitely be using this to sleep one day. Don’t ask why I like hearing people rant, because I’ll sum it up for you here: It gets out pent up anger because it points out things I notice as well. Thank you, YMS.

Now granted I am a fan of “You’re Next” and “The Guest” and “A Lonely Way to Die”

I think Adam Wingard isn’t entirely to blame . He’s certainly a decent chunk, but being that Wingard is used to working with his buddy, Simon Barret, I think the studio was able to push him around easier
