How do they not remember Keith right off the bat? Well, I mean a lot did happen lol. Things finally calmed down enough for them to really process everything. That and Keith does look a bit different with hair, so it was going to take Eren a bit of time to really see that they’re one and the same.
Keith’s tragedy was that he was just an ordinary man with hopes, ambitions, regret, a lifelong crush, and an inferiority complex. He was someone who eventually gave up on his aspirations because of the pressure, which just shows that not everyone is like or can be like an Erwin, Pixis or Hange – those who readily take up the mantle with self-confidence and lead humanity to progress. Despite being this minor side character back in S1, I loved how they made Keith such a believable and relatable character in just one episode. What’s even more great is how he had importance this whole time! We just didn’t know it yet.
Loved that Eren appears to have come to terms with himself as well as being able to move forward confidently thanks to what his mom said about him. He may not be "special" in the way he was thinking, but his mom certainly thought he was special simply because he was born. He looked so at peace with himself for the first time in a long time, and it was just a beautiful thing to see. It reminded me of his smile back in 3×09.
The ending twist of Keith purposely sabotaging Eren’s gear but failing to prevent him from joining the military (in the end, he really couldn’t change anything…he was a bystander after all), and Carla’s monologue in general were all so well-executed! The ending credits and song coming in made it that much more emotional and uplifting!
Overall, this was a fantastic episode! The character moments and filling in the gaps was amazing. And it’s episodes like these that honestly make me appreciate AoT as a whole. I wouldn’t love it as much as I did if not for these moments.

Keith is basically a Drill Sergant. They do not make friends and reminisce about old times with their recruits.
When Eren got through the training, it all went straight to hell with the Titan attack on Trost and after that Eren was constantly busy and/or imprisoned. So they never got a chance to talk about old times.

He was a little jealous about everything. About how great Grisha Jaeger was, how Carla fell in love with Grisha, how he can’t succeed with his missions. Even when he tried to keep Eren "safe", he failed. He realized he wasn’t "special". He was a BYSTANDER. Everyone is special in their own ways though. Carla made him realize that and all the experiences shows him that. He was thankful to be close to all the greatness though. Erwin, Levi, Grisha, and now Eren. To be able to witness their greatness up close, and to have a small role in them, that’s not so bad..
