I have a theory that this is a prequel to the original Death Note story.Light Turner might have been a previous owner of the Death Note.I want a after credits scene where you see a guy get the book at read it over his desk and you see Ryuk come behind him and say "Light Yagami" Ryuk laughs under his breath and says "I used to know a guy by that same name."

Interpretation aside, they couldn’t even provide rules and stick with them. I knew it wasn’t going to be accurate to the source. Was hoping it’d be more like last Airbender than Dragonball. Until I saw prisoners write Japanese for no logical reason.

Innocence, it’s the thing the anime/manga failed at the beginning that I hoped the movie would expand upon. Yagami is a good kid, ridiculously perfect really. The first part, his disent into darkness, how quick he falls is important and Turner starts worse and doesn’t fall as far. In my opinion expanding on that, and changing Light like that are my specific disappointment. Also making it an 6-10 episode miniseries.

Americans take Japanese animes….(huff huff)…. And WHITEWASH it!

Nah but seriously, they took Light from a genius student, to a straight up moron. The real Light would have NEVER told anyone, even a pretty girl name bitch, I mean Mia, about the DN. He doesn’t take unnecessary risks over a piece of pussy. Misa Misa was a beautiful model who was deeply in love with Light. Still, Light paid her ass no attention and treated her like shit. The only thing he cared about was becoming GOD and ridding the Earth of evil and crime.

An American adaptation of Death Note needs an original cast & plot to take place in America w/ minimal content (the Note and maybe Ryuk) from the original. No Light, no pseudo-Misa or L. At least that’s my opinion.

Makes more sense when you realize Light Yagami is adapted into Mia, and Misa is adapted into Light Turner

@Professor Thorgi – thanks for your thoughtful work. The original Death Note (not the manga but the 40 animated episodes) is one of my all time favorite creations ever. Just a note (hee) – I have known a few geniuses in my over 6 decades on earth. Some might call them savants. "L" as created in the manga and anime is portrayed as a very unique character with his taste for sugar and sitting posture not reflecting, perhaps, people you have known.Since I was a child I have been squatting like L so I identify. "Unrealistic"? L was one of the most genuine original fictional characters I have ever seen – he is real to me. Imagine a savant detective in the "real world" and he might very well resemble L. I have known a few Light types in my life without the power of remote murder and believe me they are not fun to hang with.

One thing that I liked about the original was that I saw Ryuk like the devil in a less traditional way. All Ryuk did was set the stage by giving Light the Death Note, Light was corrupted and went mad with power all on his own with Ryuk in a way even warning Light how he could go nuts. However when I saw the comic con trailer with Ryuk pressuring Light into using the Death Note I lost most interest in this movie.

The fact that that piece of shit of a movie had the title "death note" automatically makes it an adaptation. You can’t review it as its own thing because it simply is not. If the director had intended for this movie to be original then he should have picked a different title and a different concept. And at this point with all the shit adaptations of anime America has made, they must stop. No more adaptations. Just film your own things the way you know and let the Japanese movies for the Japanese to handle.

I disagree the Japanese live actions were amazing and the way they played with the end actually was better than the end of the anime. If you haven’t watched the part 1 and 2 Japanese live actions do it, you won’t regret it

I appreciate that they tried something different. Nothing would have been more pointless than straightforward adaptation that already has faithful japanese adaptations.
Ultimately I thought it was just alright, obviously it was way too short even for deathnote which itself is a relatively short series, Ryuk was pretty perfect and L was able to capture the odd quirks that the character portrays while also having human layer that the original series never had.
Light is drastically different from the source material, instead of being a gifted genius, he is more or less a regular dude, which I understand why people would be annoyed considering the character he was based off of.
I have to say Mia was an improvement from her source, no longer a ditzy airhead but a more proactive follower of Kira
Everyone else filled the role fine enough.
Probably would have been better if they had just told an original story involving the deathnote, as opposed to adapting the preexisting story, people would have probably been more accepting than they are to this

Ryuk was awesome I also liked the back story of how l was trained. The rest was lackluster. I pretty much agree with you proff T.

Actually Wingard got one thing right. The conflict of interests between Light and Mia in regards to their vision of the new world order. They could of capitalize the tension on this instead of L vs Light. Mia was the manipulator and was machiavecal. The twist would be that the american "kira" is actually a woman. She outsmarts Light kill him with a machiavecal plan and becomes the owner of the death note. The sequel would introduce L in the game then the mind game between L and female Kira begins. That would be a better reimagining and a more interesting plot for the fans cos its new and a good introduction to the mainstream audience. Detective psychological thriller.

They should have just adapted the Death note -Birthday spin of novel instead. Since it isn’t as well known by the masses as the anime/manga plus it’s a light novel which is shorter than a normal novel so they could actually adapt that with some grace

Fuck, I hate fanboys. Not saying you’re a fanboy, Thorgi, but Fanboys will be the reason no one ever makes a serious attempt at adapting anime and video game movies decently. No matter what they do, no matter how much or how little effort, heart, and quality into these movies, there will always be this sort of reaction. What sort of reaction? "Its not like the original, there for its inferior trash not worth the time" I should know, I’ve decried the resident evil movies for years for being trash, and yet, despite my outrage and criticism, just about everyone I know loves them.

I’ve never played the silent hill games, but I love both films, even though neither are too true to the series. Being a fanboy is a detriment to one’s actual enjoyment of the media, regardless of overall quality, or lack there of.

First Rule in life :Don’t listen to anybody, who hasn’t walk in your shoes. and if people can’t separate a simple ANIME series from an Americanize Horror Movie, then their opinion means nothing, If you like the ANIME-stick with the Anime, they already did two live action version and an "L" origin separated movie, it’s only a matter of time when some American-Studio would take the premise of the Anime Series and turn it into a simple teen Horror Movie? Cause that’s what this is "it’s Final Destination !" I’ll admit after some really bad transferring "Dragon Ball Z" or Avatar the Last Air Bender" were Not the best choice to Americanize into Si-Fi Movies, But we all know Hollywood doesn’t have an original idea left, so it copy -copy Re-make,Re-imagine, Re-do-overs, I like DEATH-NOTE it works as a simple horror movie, It’s a shame it wasn’t a Full Netflix Series,
