I like Shinji as a character I use to get mad when people said they didn’t like Shinji. Shinji ain’t some ultra bad ass like Kurt Russell from "The Thing" and "Escape from New York" those kind of characters are bad ass and likeable, so I can understand why people don’t like Shinji. I was just like Shinji when I was 14, you probably wouldn’t like me either LMAO.

I am watching Berserk, on episode 21, I ‘m on episode 4 of serial experiments lain, I only watched 12 episodes of monster , so when I’m finished Berserk and Lain i plan on watching this one, I watched those 12 episodes of monster I think in January, so I think I’ll rewatch those episodes, my question to you is do you watch one anime at a time or marathon or do you watch 2 or more series at a time?I can finish 12 episode series in 1 night, not very often, or I’ll take a week to watch one or even longer. Just curious, I like serial experiments lain, but I’m having problems with sort of being bored. I want to finish it, is the ending pay off good enough to keep on watching and finish it?I think I understand sort of what’s going on, I’m normally a smart person, is the ending amazing? kind of like ergo proxy, some were slow and some made no sense at the time, but I see it at the end how important those mundane episodes were, and the ending was so great andd I’m glad I watched it, I also loved paranoia agent, but I still don’t think I understand a few things, yet I think I do. I love phycological anime, it’s my favorite.

Misato felt unnecessary to me. Shinji could’ve lived with hyuga or aoba or kaji or maya. They’re probably more responsible

i came away from this show thoroughly disliking it. i found shinji’s character repulsive i dislike the other characters with the exception of misoto. i guess i just can relate to being too depressed to do anything lying in your own self pity is fine and all but you have no other option but to move forward. life waits for no one even on my worst days i don’t have to option of just giving up maybe that’s why i find a show about depressed people of unrelatable. that being said it was an excellent work of but just like with most things if you have never experienced it you cant relate to it so it;s definitely not for everyone

Awesome review, NGE is my favourite anime ever..have you ever seen Revolutionary Girl Utena? I’d recommend, the symbolism is alot more overt from the very start compared to NGE and its alot more layered due to it being symbolic and allegorical from the start rather than evolving it to it, but I do prefer NGE

I  don’t even think it’s bad or rather unintentional that people hate on shinji. It’s more like he’s just the type of guy who happens to share all these traits that typically get one ostracized. Sure he’s a wimp, doubts himself constantly, has trouble speaking up and when faced with obstacles often chooses to flee.
But that’s where the anime actually begins to excel. It’s not saying Shinji has got to change into a hero. He just has to grow on his own terms.

To me, that’s always been the hallmark of great characters: Ones whose character’s doesn’t bend to some narrative convention, but instead progresses naturally and stay true to themselves.
It’s not about us liking him. It’s about him learning to like himself.

I would recommend to anyone wanting to watch this show that you should watch it in Japanese, the dub is passable, but far from being on the level of or better than the original Japanese.

Good review, though I think you’re slightly mistaken on certain aspects.

(SPOILER ALERT FOR THE SERIES AND THE FILMS)

I feel there’s progression, Shinji eventually accepts himself and chooses to live in a bitter-sweet devastated post impact world, Rei warms up to Shinji and rejects being Gendo’s doll, Asuka accepts Shinji even after he masturbated on her comatose, mentally-raped body, by accepting Shinji she accepts her traumas which will hopefully mean she will overcome them.

Also Shinji is a traumatized 14 year old kid who was abandoned by father after losing his mother and later guilt tripped by his father into piloting a living biotechnological god who has his mother’s soul and whom he shares pain with, so naturally he will be whiny and annoying(though I don’t think so). He’s suppose to be a real life surrogate in the Eva universe.

Regarding Rei, she is suppose to be a doll, something that the creator made to show Otakus that their desires to have a completely obedient wafiu like that is disturbing, it backfired pretty hard.

Regarding the polarizing reception(though I feel it’s significantly more positive than it was 20-15 years ago), this series and films are more directed to those who suffered from depression and self-isolation like the creator, meaning those who are undergoing those trials will have a far favorable opinion on NGE and the movie far more than those who haven’t.

Just wanted to add my $0.02, still nice review.

the problems were not just with budget. it was mostly time constraint like most anine that’s why a lot of shows are rough upon release of the tv version but most are fixed in home video releases. eva didn’t really get much of that chance after because yes they did suffer from budgetary constraints but it seemed to be more of a timing problem .

For me, Shinji, Misato and Kaji were the most enjoyable characters to watch. Kaji has a really relaxing voice in the sub (same as Spike). I think the original ending of the anime was really good, and honestly, it’s basically the same ending as the end of evangelion, because in the end it’s all about what goes on in Shinji’s head.

I’m only just starting, and finding it kinda frustrating- for a series all about psychology, and where the future is dependant on the performance of some psychologically vulnerable kids. Would it be so hard to hire a therapist?

yeah sry not buying unintentional cross shaped explosions in an anime that basically adopts the story of the old testament in a mecha anime …. i mean seriously we have angels , eva , adam, seele and all the other references including the lance of longinius , lilith and whatnot pretty much all of th eanime revolves around biblical imagery

I came away from NGE having this fun love to hate relationship with it. Basically I have this thing where I pretend the movies didn’t happen and considering the show the actual complete series ONLY BECAUSE it makes things more hilarious. I only watched the series for the first time about a year ago and I basically went "wth lol" so much through it. Series is really fucked up BUT you get a certain appreciation for it when you read/watch analyses of its actual content because a lot of it makes SO MUCH more sense when you understand the context of what Shinji represents and what the final episodes were trying to talk about and the mess which is the end of evangelion and what it was suppose to be going for with its content. The series is both awful and amazing at the same time.

Excellent review Bob.The only thing I’d disagree is your statement on the animation. It wasn’t that bad during the dialogue scenes, and when it got tovthe battles with the Eva’s, it was incredibly well done.

Evangelion is a meaningless mindfuck, that simply trere, because it’s creator is just insane. I regret every minute I spent watching it. And no. The film didn’t make it better. It was one of the worst and most nihilistic pieces of crap I have seen in an anime. Good animation? Yes. Spoiled to make an abomination? Definitely.

Heh yeah, yours is a fair opinion, but I found Shinji to be one of the most interesting, deep and and complex anime character I’ve seen, followed closely by Anthy from Utena. Also, I think you got the intentions behind Rei’s character wrong – she’s not meant to be mysterious, she’s the deconstruction of the Ideal Japanese Wife character, a quiet beautiful girl who always does what people need her to do. Here, her being quiet and acting without her own free will is intentionally done in the way that makes her look like soulless machine, but she’s absolutely anything but. I love the scene early in the series when she’s openly hostile to Asuka, and also when she spots Shinji touching what I presume is Gendo’s glasses. The scene that follows it looks like your typical WACKY ANIME HIJINX (again, intentionally, as Evangelion explores a theme of using people for your own benefit, which also includes sexualisation), but done so masterfully disturbing I really felt sick myself. Anyway, both of these scenes actually show her trying to fight for herself in a small ways, and watching this girl who ultimately knows she’s doomed from the start is really heart breaking. Which is also why I love EoE as she, spotting a chance to do things her way, instantly grabs it. You go, Rei!

I`ve watched NGE since i`ve seen it in the late/end 90`s in TV countless times and i consider it until this day to be one of the most intense experiences the medium anime can offer. I would consider NGE + EoE to be an anime anybody (even not anime fans) should have watched at least once in his or her lifetime.
About the japanese dub: It`s brilliant… Especially Misatos original voice actress is absolutely amazing (especially in the last third of the show and EoE) and one of the best VA`s i ever experienced in anime. I`m glad that this show first aired subbed here in germany, as it made me appreciate watching anime with the original VO.

If I’m honest, Shinji is my favourite anime character out of all the series I’ve watched. He’s one of the most realistic characters. I don’t like it when people hate on his character and say he’s ‘whiny’ but fair enough. Just know if any normal teenage kid was put into his situation, they’d react the same way. He discoverers more and more fucked up shit about his life everyday. But I respect everyone’s opinions as long as they have reason for them. I think he deserves more appreciation, but that’s just my opinion 🙂

"The mouths move when the characters don’t move" That’s anime.

I like Rei, thouhg, I do think as overwritten as she is, it’s laughable.

How could you like Misato but dislike Asuka? Both are loud, comic relief characters with non-distinct personalities.

Voting a 10/10 isnt easy because we all question our own views and our own abilities of the merits of art and our own taste.
But im not aspiring to be the likes of a world renown artist like Bach or Mozart. And i dont care if others like my tastes just as long as my explanation helps them find if they like this anime or not.

Ive probably watched about 9 Japanese series all the way through. And NGE is my only 10/10 with Berserk coming in close second for their animation, story, construction, pacing and closure.
Im not the best person to ask about japanese culture but my views on art and writing are extremely picky.

But then you have to ask what are you trying to get out of the anime?
I realy enjoyed Dragonball but i saw thoroughly its flaws throughout the viewing.
I did not EXPECT it to be a good story, or to be paced well. But it made a realy great distraction. And inspiration for how to make characters move when i animate to make them interesting.
My point, dont let a numbering system confuse you. I dont think measuring somthing like art to the same ruler for everything is a good idea.

I started this with out any expectations what so ever, and as much as I hate to say, it is one of the most pretentious and up its own ass anime I have ever seen, with its predictable story and symbolism so obvious a 3rd grader could understand, but it did have nice mech fights and some interesting ideas, so i’m kinda glad I saw it…kinda.

We are on the same page with this one. Just finished the series/movie last night and I gave it a 9/10, not a rating I give out easily. I can see why certain people wouldn’t like it but for me its one of the best.
