If you want to understand the story, you gotta watch the two Eva movies: "Death and Alive", "The End of Evangelion". If you want futher story development, you gotta watch the three "new movies" of Evangelion: 1.11, 2.22, 3.33

Here’s something horrifying. The EVA’s roar? That’s Shinji’s mother’s voice actress screaming, slowed down. But they didn’t tell her to express rage or pain in it. The EVA is howling in *misery*.

something to clerify
Eva unit 01 is way stronger then Eva 00 and Eva 02. the reason probebly effected by the pilot sync with the eva, but its also effected by "the creature" nerv put this armor on and called it Eva…
so far there was 3 modes to Eva 01.
the normal form – what we mostly see.. that shinji piloting the eva
dummy plug – which take control from shinji and makes nerv decide the Eva action
(at this point u may ask why need pilot anyway, the dummy plug mode isnt stable… see how the Eva act with Rei for example)
and 3rd form: was complitly the Eva awakened, the "creature" they made the eva from…
i’ve watched evangelion like 5 times now… and idk exacly what the Eva true form.. yet i have a guess… which u may discover till episode 25…

This is sort a transitional episode for me. Here, Shinji does finally ask himself openly the question "why do I pilot the EVA?". Still, the main focus is on Shinji’s reaction to his father’s betrayal — the desire to let go of it all, and then the guilt of not being there to help when his friends get skewered. So he shows determination… he comes back… he screams at his father… he gets into the EVA. And he does a hell of a bad-ass job… until the damn thing runs out of energy. What now? The EVA awakens! It is a primal being, and it… eats… the angel it just defeated! And while he’s doing that… if all systems have broken down… what the heck is happening to Shinji?
Episode 20, aptly titled "Form of the Mind, Form of the Man — Weaving A Story 2: Oral Phase" , is one of my favorites. It starts the final run of Evangelion, and shows more clearly where this show is going to go. I hope you’ll enjoy it! 🙂

One thing I like about this episode, or rather this anime in general. It is that all time limit is real. There is no 5 minutes on Nameg thing here. Shinji’s action scene started at 18:30 when he rescued all the way to him ran out of energy at 19:30 . Exactly one minute.
