The Academy Award for Best Animated Picture did not exist at that point, unfortunately. The Beauty and the Beast became the first animated feature to get nominated for best picture in 1991, however. Princess Mononoke was poorly marketed in the US. The distributors had no idea how to handle such a mature movie that just so happened to be a cartoon.
