Cool theory, I never bother to look that deeply into the things I watch or read, not usually. It has to be something extra special.

At 3:38 If comments from me, they are likely to walk at night, dusk, or night that is why they are no shadows.

I don’t see how Totoro being a supposed "God Of Death" is suppose to be horrific/scary though.

Just because a creature is associated with Death doesn’t mean that creature is evil.

For example, The Grim Reaper. He’s not "evil", he’s just neutral. In his lore, all he does is guide the souls of the departed to their final resting place. That doesn’t make him evil

    Omg! Sasukee?
    It’s pronounced Saskè..
And no Totoro is not death, it’s a forest spirit who helps find lost children. Another Japanese legend where Totoro is based off of.

I think, the truth is, maybe the creater lazy, struggle, or stress at the end of to create the movie?

I know it isn’t true because the creator made another movie called Spirited Away and did not hesitate to say the movie is based around the theme of prositution, and that the demon thing giving the girl gold was him trying to buy her.
He is more than willing to admit to that horrible truth along with many other flims; no doubt in my mind if this was true he would of told everyone about it saying it was.

Hell he even admitted the mother in this movie sitution is based off of his real life dad, who was bed ridden during his entire childhood because of his illness. This man is not afraid to admit the dark themes in his movies, if this was true he wouldn’t of denied it and honestly has no reason to if it was true.

This is one of my favorite fan theories.  I can’t imagine a better guide than Totoro for children to follow into death.  It’s… comforting.

I remember reading somewhere that the bath house in spirited away is actually a brothel and that’s why no face wants to give chihiro money. Not sure how valid this theory is though

    March 25, 2019 @ 6:43 pm

Are we still doing this? Trying to make innocent kiddy movies into something much more depressing and "realistic"? Really? This is a movie for children! Totoro is magical, he is not a god of death, he can only be seen by children (presumably only the ones who believe), Mei didn’t drown, Satsuki didn’t commit suicide, and the cat bus was just passing a cemetery. Case closed, end of story!

Pretty weak theory. Also, ever though that the urban legend was created AFTER the film was released?

So I cannot believe that Totoro is some sort of cute thanatos.. because Totoro is my favourite story/film/character ever.. However it is a very interesting theory, also I already knew about the sandal.

    March 25, 2019 @ 6:49 pm

It makes a ton of sense, and makes the movie much more interesting. But if that was really behind the plot, I don’t see why it would be denied so vehemently. At most the creator would just not touch on the speculations to add a air of mystery.
