If Atomsk’s symbol means "adult", then this explanation kind of unravels, doesn’t it? Why is the "pirate king" who’s "fighting the power" with a guitar adopting a symbol meaning "adult"?

Furthermore, it seems like a contradiction that Haruko (the force driving everyone to rebel) is truly in love with – and literally chasing, to the ends of the universe – the anthropomorphism of adulthood.

That’s the only thing that doesn’t make sense to me. Would really like to hear your explanation of the second season.

Real creativity is in danger of extinction. We do indeed (at least in America) have a public school system that has a zero tolerance policy for difference. However, to write off the adult world as nonsensical and the child world as better is what shows you to be a child. Certainly everybody wishes they could be a child again, but unfortunately it’s impossible to go back. We all have a moment where we either “grow up” or essentially die. So what’s better? Live by the rules? Or die young? Of course, there is a third path. Change the rules. But before you tear down a fence, you better ask why it was put up in the first place. The adult world exists because of people who took the third path. Believe it or not this way works. Eventually everybody’s gotta eat. As long as we can still call ourselves human then everything has a price. You can live and love and die by your own way, but die you will. To quote the greatest rock band: “You don’t get something for nothing. You can’t have freedom for free. You won’t get wise with the sleep still in your eyes no matter what your dream might be. ”

I was born in 2000 so I’m growing up with this show. And I will never forget its message.

Pretty sure you made this all up, this show still doesn’t make sense 18 years later.

    Nevermind, you won me over.

Actually, Naota’s older brother is named Tasuku. “Takun” is the nickname Mamimi gives him, Naota, and anything that she likes.

Great video. It’s no wonder so many people feel connected to this anime. Probably the outcasts of their lives but that’s not a bad thing. I’ll be a kid at heart till the day I die.

It’s a good explanation of the social commentary perspective. This is a show with a lot of levels, and a lot of explanations apply, but there is one that seems to fit the emotional aspect of the show and why it seems to grab me every time I see it. So that being said, I’ll give you a choice: "You take the blue pill—the story ends, you wake up in your bed and believe whatever you want to believe. You take the red pill—you stay in Wonderland, and I show you how deep the rabbit hole goes. Remember: all I’m offering is the truth. Nothing more."

I’m glad this is not a video.

Dang not that i dont appreciate the video but frankly keeping the meaning of flcl in obscurity, and letting people figure it out on their own is frankly apart of the magic of flcl and the nature of the show as well

Fucking AMAZING video homie. You already know I’m a HUGE fan of the series and it’s great to see someone who can deconstruct the social commentary FLCL delivers and properly articulate how all of the elements of the show from the music and animation to the symbolism and pop culture references make it an such amazing project. So many people just write it off as random and never look below the surface because they just think its weird. It is kind of random and weird but it’s so much more than that. Good fucking video.

One last thing. If you are being free and creative yes you might lose out on jobs. Like they say when one door closes another one opens. And the new ones can be better than the last. they opened cuz you are being you.

I’m a much older woman who never conformed to living the way others lived. I found myself in some trouble sometimes and disliked by family members and others but that’s what I chose and was happy doing it. I have a poster in my room that shows a town where everyone’s house is the same and one individual had painted his roof pink. Well the picture shows him being escorted by two Police officers to a paddy wagon. Note he was not being escorted by the men in white jackets taking him to a mental institute but by authority. He refused to conform and was punished for it. …..I loved your video. It opened my eyes to understanding flcl. I cant wait til you do the second season.

I wish someone told me this kind of stuff earlier cause I was too young and stupid to understand. I never grow up but I lost a little hope. I want to make a comic series telling the same message but I just don’t know how to get there nor how to get the money to help me there.

I don’t agree with you at 100%, since parts like when Naota’s father has a bruise in his neck or when Naota challenge everyone beliefs and swings the bat show another point to this anime: the adult world is not what you think it is, it sometimes can be harsh, etc. FLCL to me means that is okay to grow up and see the world entirely, but don’t do as adults and lock up in this cage just to be safe from that world. Don’t rush into adulthood, enjoy being who you are and don’t be afraid of what’s coming next.

Still I agree with you in most parts, great video, keep it up.

Thanks for making this video, this was a much needed therapy session. I’ve been having a crisis about my love of anime an FanFiction and what society would think since I’m now an adult and don’t want to stop loving these things. I like being childish! I won’t let anyone stop me from loving them. My family is supportive of my interests too as long as I get a job and never do drugs. I’m going to be a nerdy aunt for my niece and nephew.
