When people try to say Light is the smartest character in Death Note, this scene alone reminds me of why he’s not even top 3. Had Light just ignored this challenge by L, Light could have literally avoided any difficulties to his mission. He’s such a child with a god complex and it’s what leads him to all of his mistakes — always underestimating his opponents and always overestimating himself.

That right there is the moment when Light takes the bait and confirms that yes, despite whatever he thinks, what he’s doing is, by all rational means, evil. Any sane person wouldn’t take advantage of supernatural powers just to kill someone else out of sheer spite, which is exactly what Light ends up doing. In the long run, this is what screws Kira over as a whole, as this allows to L to hunt him down and commence a game between the two which ultimately leads to Light biting the dust.

One of my friends watched the 1st japanese death note movie and he hated it and therefore hated the anime and completely refused to watch it so one day when he came over I started watching episode 1 around him and by episode 3 he was hooked we watched all 37 episodes in 2 days or so

Heh, I would be scared knowing that there is some random dude killing for justice and calling himself a "god". I mean, in my opinion, at least, he could snap at any moment and even kill INNOCENT people… Yeah, he killed some cruel people, but, its better for them to rot in jail, than having a highschooler with a god like power.
Also, there are always reasons why people kill, some for fun, admiration, laughs, fame or even revenge (for all we know the killers that Light killed may had one of these reasons)… Just like Light had a reason, for "Justice".
If the anime for example was about WE NOT KNOWING about Light’s character/intentions, and somebody had another deathnote that killed Light (and the killer having the same intentions as Light), we would be on mostly Lights KILLER side right? Its just the same as the killers or thiefs that LIGHT killed we are on LIGHTS side… We don’t know them, but they might had better intentions… Justifying killers and horrible people am I eh? But isin’t it the same we do with Light?
(Side note: No I don’t symphatize killers in deathnote nor’ in real life, I was just putting up an example)
