Junk Putty the Death Note causes death. Light’s father had a heart attack but didn’t die. So it was just a crazy coincidence to shock people.

It’s cool, Light’s descent. Him being capable of great good or great bad. I think he was genuinely a DECENT person, as in, not obviously evil and not overly good. He was kind of static, just took things as they came and acted as moral as he should for appearances, but would take the easier route if he could get away with it.
But once he was given some power, he was able to act on his baser feelings of "this person is useless, and I can remove them and get away with it.", going down to admitting he’d kill his family if he had to (episode 2~3), not even considering that an "okay it is time to stop, that got out of hand".
Spoilers for episodes after 10.
When he loses his memory of the death note all according to keikaku, he does become a greater good with a sense of actual justice and not warped justice. To truly think of the benefit of all, instead of "the benefit of me will benefit all" which is his mindset with the notebook.

I know I’m really late, but "heart attack" from the Death Note is more correctly translated as "heart failure". Heart attacks can be helped and you can recover, like Sorichiou (or whatever his name is) does here. heart failure is just, it quits working, bye bye
